Sheffield United reigned victorious this weekend in a highly tight 1-0 win in the first Steel City Derby in six years. 

The fixture took place at a roaring Bramall Lane, with a fantastic atmosphere from both sets of fans and heavy police presence. 

Tyreese Campbell was the man of the hour, scoring a tidy finish after slipped through by Callum O’Hare. Campell managed to get loose of the Wednesday defence in the box and slot past the keeper at the near post.

Chris Wilder, Sheffield United boss, said: “The players bought into everything we are doing; they always knew it was going to be a tight game, but we had a bit of quality.”

Campbell’s effort stood as the only registered shot on target for 90 minutes. Wednesday was unable to hit the target with any of their ten efforts. 

Danny Röhl said, “No team deserved to win today. But all in all, it’s about the small details in such games. Stupid fouls are what we need to improve on to take points.

“For me, there was nothing in the game. Our goalkeeper had not one save; there was not one moment of note; then there was one.” 

Although the game’s content left something to be desired, the atmosphere around the city buzzed with excitement.

Police maintained a strong presence, from multiple tram stops and Ecclesall Road to the stadium.

The Blades now leapfrog local rivals, such as Leeds United, to second place in the Championship. They sit joint with league leaders Sunderland on 31 points after 15 games, only behind on goal difference. 

Wednesday, however, is languishing down in 15th and still unable to escape the threat of relegation, being 3 points off of 22nd Cardiff. 

Both sets of fans will undoubtedly be looking forward to the reverse fixture, and the final Steel City derby is set to take place on March 15th.
