A site has been prepared to develop approximately 33 affordable family homes in Sheffield.
Sheffield City Council has earmarked £690,000 to start this project.
According to details obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request, the funds will cover essential groundwork, including site cleanup and decontamination efforts to prepare the area for construction.
The money will primarily go toward “remediation of the site,” which will involve clearing vegetation, excavating and filling former residential basements, and addressing contamination from previous industrial use as a scrapyard.
This preliminary work is essential to create a safe and stable foundation for the upcoming housing project.
While the final number of homes is subject to change as the design process progresses, the council’s initial grant bid proposed an “indicative scheme of 33 family houses for Affordable Rent.”
This plan underscores the council’s commitment to providing affordable housing options, aiming to alleviate Sheffield’s housing shortages, particularly for families in need.
Although a detailed schedule for the project is still being developed, Sheffield City Council anticipates applying for planning permission in 2025/26.
If approved, construction could start as early as 2026/27, with the completion of the new homes expected in 2027/28.
This FOI data reflects Sheffield’s ongoing efforts to improve housing accessibility.
By 2028, the council aims to deliver much-needed affordable homes, which will serve as a vital resource for families in the community.
