Fans of Liam Payne, former One Direction member, gathered to bring flowers, letters and pictures in memory of the singer.

The Covid memorial was transformed into a shrine to the 31-year-old who died tragically on Wednesday 16th October.

The memorial took place on Saturday 20th October at the Balm Green Gardens in the city centre after the plans for the event were spread online through TikTok and X (previously Twitter).

Isobel Sheridan, a Liam Payne fan who attended the memorial, said: “It was great to see everyone come together and just celebrate his life, especially since most of us have been fans since we were kids.”

The popstar died after falling from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires last week. A vigil was set up outside the hotel and has been visited recently by his father.

Isobel Sheridan continued: “When I found out he’d died I couldn’t come to terms with it, just having him be in our lives for so long.”

The Sheffield memorial has been accompanied by many others around the country, with tributes being paid in places such as Manchester Cathedral Gardens, London’s Hyde Park and Chamberlain Square in Birmingham.

Fans sang songs written by Liam Payne, shared memories with other fans and consoled each other.

There were letters written to Liam by fans to adorn the memorial sculpture, along with flowers and candles.

Thank you cards were also placed at the memorial by fans to show their appreciation to the man who had such a large impact on their lives.

Many celebrities have also taken to social media to share their condolences, including other members of One Direction and Payne’s former partner Cheryl.
