Sheffield Mencap and Gateway ramps up support for carers of people with learning disabilities and autism in east Sheffield.

As carers continue to face long-term challenges, Sheffield Mencap’s support network is helping to ease the emotional and practical burdens of caregiving.

Ami Alam, 25, the carer community co-worker at Sheffield Mencap & Gateway, said: “We want to give back by providing them with activities and a space to talk.”

Sheffield is home to an estimated 12,000 people with learning disabilities, many of whom rely on carers to navigate daily life.

However, carers often face hurdles in accessing the right support.

Mr Alam said: “The biggest challenge for carers is knowing what options are available. No one expects to be in this position, and with a lack of information, they have to figure it out as they go.”

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, an independent charity based at Norfolk Lodge, has been providing support to individuals with learning disabilities and their families since 1951.

They have supported over 500 people and continue to expand their offerings, particularly for unpaid carers, many of whom are family members.

Mr Alam said: “Carers don’t always see themselves as carers. We’re raising awareness of how crucial they are to the community. Without them, the UK economy would suffer significantly.”

In recent years, Sheffield Mencap has launched various activities aimed at supporting carers, including the Cosy Carers Cabin, Baby and Toddler Playgroup, and Massage and Yoga sessions.

These programs are designed to address both physical and mental wellbeing, catering to the individual needs of carers.

From the feedback forms, one carer said: “I wish I knew about this group sooner. I will definitely return after the holiday.”

Another person who joined the yoga session said: “It was great. I slept like a baby afterward.”

Looking ahead, Sheffield Mencap and Gateway will partner with Darnall Well Being, starting on 19 November, to further extend their outreach and support for carers in east Sheffield.
