But no matter how it sounds, catcalling isn\u2019t a compliment; it\u2019s a constant reminder that women are viewed as public property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear: catcalling is not about attraction. It\u2019s a power play. It\u2019s a misogynistic tactic used by men to remind women that their bodies are always up for comment, that their presence in public is never entirely their own. It reinforces a cruel, quiet rule: step outside, and you become a man&#8217;s property to desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catcalling and wolf-whistling are everywhere. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomenuk.org\/campaigns\/safe-spaces-now\/\">According to UN Women<\/a> UK, research shows that over 7 in 10 women in the UK experience sexual harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And over 95% of women aren\u2019t reporting the assault as they don\u2019t believe it will change anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why is this still happening, and why are so many women still shrugging it off?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every woman has a story, and we\u2019re here to make them heard and tear down the systems created by men that keep women under their control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, catcalling has become so normalised that for many women, it\u2019s just another part of daily life; the price to pay after simply stepping outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But normal doesn\u2019t mean harmless; it\u2019s just what we\u2019ve been taught to put up with.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong>Is Catcalling a Dystopia in Disguise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catcalling may not seem <a href=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/scarletthreads\/2025\/05\/28\/the-outdoor-web-when-public-space-becomes-a-womans-dystopia\/\">dystopian<\/a> at first, but similar to many ways of oppressing women, it\u2019s hiding in plain sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Margaret Atwood&#8217;s novel The Handmaid\u2019s Tale, women are silenced, constantly watched, and seen as objects of sexual desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re stripped of names, rights, and voices, but more disturbingly, they\u2019re told they should feel honoured even to be looked at. Does this sound familiar to you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the same twisted logic catcalling relies on. When a woman is whistled at or commented on in the street, it\u2019s a modern reminder that her body is visible, judged, and monitored in public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Gilead\u2019s watchful eye, the male gaze follows a woman wherever she goes, often unsolicited and uninvited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst we may not say \u201cUnder His Eye,\u201d every catcall carries the same message: You\u2019re being watched, and your presence is a man&#8217;s consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong>The Illusion of Flattery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most frustrating defences of catcalling is that it\u2019s meant as a \u2018compliment\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That women should \u2018take it as a bit of fun\u2019 or see it as some \u2018old-fashioned flirting\u2019 like you see in your favourite movie from the 80s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But ask any woman if she\u2019s ever felt comfortable or <em>empowered<\/em> by being barked at by a stranger. Most will say no. Catcalling is never about admiration; it\u2019s a constant reminder of who is in control<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2016 YouGov poll showed that only 12% of women feel flattered by catcalling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>88% felt uncomfortable and even unsafe. The truth is, if you don\u2019t smile back, \u2018you\u2019re a b*tch\u2019. If you challenge it, you\u2019re hysterical. It\u2019s a game that a woman can never win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong>What Men Say to Justify the Catcall<\/strong>ing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, some men will still try to justify catcalling by blaming women themselves, claiming it\u2019s because of \u2018what we wear\u2019, \u2018how we walk\u2019, or the \u201cmessage\u201d our clothing supposedly sends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tired excuse goes like this: \u201cIf she didn\u2019t want attention, she wouldn\u2019t dress like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way of thinking is not only outdated but also dangerous. It suggests that a woman\u2019s outfit is an open invitation for public commentary, as if self-expression somehow voids her right to respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s absolutely disgusting that women are expected to anticipate and accept verbal assault simply for choosing to dress how they please.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unfortunate truth is that catcalling happens no matter what we wear, from school uniforms to crop tops to business suits. The problem isn\u2019t the clothes, it\u2019s the men who feel entitled to comment on women\u2019s bodies as if it\u2019s their right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And until that changes, women will keep being forced to justify their choice of clothing, rather than men being held accountable for their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong>We Deserve to Own the Streets, Not to be Controlled On Them<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catcalling forces women to perform\u2014whether it&#8217;s smiling to stay safe or dressing to avoid attention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in doing so, it chips away at our right to move freely, to exist without commentary, to <em>just be<\/em>. Every shout, whistle, and crude remark reminds us that for some, we are still not people. We are props.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So no, it\u2019s not just a catcall. It\u2019s a warning shot.
