In a demand for ‘more affordable housing’, approval for the construction of more than 74 news homes has been approved by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.

Deputy Leader of the council, Sarah Allen, said: “The aim was to increase the levels of council housing stock particularly where new build homes are not feasible.”

Under this project, the council will begin the development of the Eastwood housing area and the Maltby site.

Within the Eastwood housing area there will be two new developments that will take place on the Netherfield Court and the York Road sites together. It is believed a projection of 31 new homes will be available for council rent.

Councillor Allen said: “We’re projecting to build 12 properties at the York Road site including four two bed houses particularly for older people.

“The second site is the Netherfield Court which is the heart of the Netherfield area it is a former care home decommissioned and demolished which means it is ready to be developed.”

The site will be projecting 14 three bed houses and five four bed houses with the intention of accommodating larger families.

Ms Allen added: “The need for this mix of properties has been consulted and thought to be most appropriate and ward members have been consulted to make sure that the proposal is right for the area.”

The Maltby housing development will take the remainder of the 43 new homes to be built in the Borough.

The site for the new homes will be under Addison road and Larch Road which, according to Councillor Allen, has the lowest number of Council homes within the Borough.

A further 27 homes will be built on Addison road and 16 on Larch Road.
