Every. Single. Day. It doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s sunny, cloudy or snowing &#8211; UV rays don\u2019t care. Though it would be great &#8211; melanin isn\u2019t a magical force field; but it would be great if it was!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/are-people-of-color-at-risk-for-skin-cancer\/\">Skin Cancer Foundation<\/a>, skin cancer accounts for 1-2% of all cancers in Black people. It might sound quite low, but this is the thing &#8211; when it does show up, it\u2019s often found later rather than soon. This means that the delay can be dangerous. \u201cThere\u2019s a false belief that melanin is more protective than it really is.\u201d says Dr. Downie. Even the darkest skin only gives you the equivalent of SPF 13, which is the level of protection against UV (B) rays &#8211; and that\u2019s not cutting it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked Rebecca Elson, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/reskinclinic.co.uk\/\">RESkin<\/a> and an expert in Black skin and problematic skin, about what we should be doing:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMelanin is a natural defence, but it\u2019s not enough. Michael Iwuji, a Business student, told us that he spends around \u00a310 a month on skincare products:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been freed from the simple skincare routine like just water and moisturiser. I actually look after my skin now, especially because of my melanin. I don&#8217;t want any risks.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So what should we look for?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2605 A broad spectrum (UVA + UVB)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2605 SPF 30+ (preferably 50)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2605 Antioxidants to fight free radicals&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2605 Chemical filters (no white cast, absorbs easily).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rihanna, Founder of Fenty Beauty said it best, for <\/strong><strong><em>Yahoo Entertainment<\/em><\/strong><strong>:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s hot or grey, UV rays are always out. The biggest misconception is that Black people don\u2019t need sunscreen. We do. Every day.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our recommendation? Mesoestetic Melan 130 Pigment Control.
