{"id":712,"date":"2025-05-28T15:34:50","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T14:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/playstyles.co.uk\/?p=712"},"modified":"2025-05-28T16:09:33","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T15:09:33","slug":"cameroon-v-fifa-the-football-kit-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/playstyles\/2025\/05\/28\/cameroon-v-fifa-the-football-kit-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameroon v FIFA: The football kit war"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\"><em>Whatever Puma were smoking in the early 2000s when designing the Cameroon kits, we want to try it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the space of two years, the Central African side wore two very unique kits with extremely unorthodox design features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"><em>2002<\/em><\/mark><\/strong> &#8211; defying norms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameroon headed to Mali with the aim of defending their African Cup of Nations title, and once again became Kings of Africa by defeating Senegal 3-2 on penalties in Bamako.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arsenal invincible Lauren, the late Marc-Vivien Fo\u00e9 and a young Samuel Eto\u2019o all featured in a campaign of pure dominance, with Cameroon not conceding a single goal throughout the whole tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They looked good doing it too, donning a <a href=\"https:\/\/selectkits.com\/products\/retro-cameroon-2002-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sleeveless, basketball jersey-style kit<\/a> in the blazing Mali sun. The red shorts and yellow socks paired with the green top formed the colours of the Cameroon flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/assets.pinterest.com\/ext\/embed.html?id=20336635811260432\" height=\"527\" width=\"345\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>FIFA however weren\u2019t so keen on the strip, and banned it prior to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comedically, Puma added jet black sleeves, enabling the kit to maintain its vest-like design, with FIFA spokesperson Keith Cooper snarkily saying \u201cyou can always expect something different from Cameroon, not only in terms of their shirts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>2004<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; defying FIFA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just two years later and Cameroon were back to it, this time releasing a \u2018onesie\u2019 style kit, in which the shirt and shorts were stitched together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" data-src=\"https:\/\/playstyles.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2025\/05\/cameron-kits-nss-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-714 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/playstyles.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2025\/05\/cameron-kits-nss-13.jpg 800w, https:\/\/playstyles.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2025\/05\/cameron-kits-nss-13-480x267.jpg 480w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/445;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo credit: NSS Sports<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FIFA officials watched in disbelief as Cameroon played their entire African Cup of Nations tournament in the kit, despite strict instruction to revert to a normal kit from the quarter final onwards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cameroon football federation Fecafoot were fined $154,000, with <a href=\"https:\/\/playstyles.co.uk\/2025\/05\/27\/fifa-leak-club-world-cup\/\">FIFA <\/a>wasting no time with their sanctioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puma defended their design, and only begrudgingly changed the strip after FIFA threatened them with a six-point World Cup qualifying group point deduction, which would have all but ensured they missed out on Germany \u201806.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the aftermath, FIFA added the word \u2018separate\u2019 to the Laws of the Game that outlined the compulsory equipment of a football kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameroon have been relatively well behaved since then when it comes to kit designs, which is a shame because we think Bryan Mbeumo would pull off a one-piece kit with ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Cameroon_supporters.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Featured image via Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whatever Puma were smoking in the early 2000s when designing the Cameroon kits, we want to try it.
