Even if you don\u2019t know what it is, you\u2019ve probably seen \u2018blokecore\u2019 on the streets, on Pinterest and on Instagram recently. But why? Ollie Mitchell investigates.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trend of fashion influencers – no matter the gender – incorporating football – or football-inspired – items into \u2018cool\u2019 outfits has skyrocketed into the mainstream across the past year or so, marking a distinct change in how football is seen as an influence on fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, it\u2019s a large part of the reason this website exists in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adidas Sambas and Gazelles are all over the place now, and that\u2019s just one small part of the \u2018blokecore\u2019 trend that\u2019s making teens in LA dress like blokes in a pub in Newcastle. Or Basingstoke. Or Colchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Football shirts, scarves and bucket hats have also started to make their way away from the terraces and into the streets of New York, Paris and more – but why on Earth is this happening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I spoke to Kerry Sands, a fashion student at the University of East London, who explained where it seemed to have come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: \u201cWe spend so much of our time analysing trends, predicting trends and trying to understand the point of them. For example, we predicted that burgundy would have a big year in 2024, and that ended up being the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHowever, we didn\u2019t really see \u2018blokecore\u2019 coming. I think what\u2019s interesting about it is that it started soon after [Lionel] Messi went to America, and it seemed to start from there because celebrities went to watch him play, and wore the shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, a huge number of celebrities have been seen at games – from Prince Harry to Kim Kardashian, to Liam Gallagher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one name that\u2019s been seen at the DRV-PNK Stadium really seems to tipify the impact that Lionel Messi has had on the eventual rise of blokecore. LeBron James<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve Prestwick, an English sports fan living in Atlanta, said: \u201cSport is seen so differently over here compared to in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSports in the States are seen as glamorous and cool. If you play in your high school team, you\u2019re super cool. In Harrogate, where I\u2019m from, nobody cares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFootball is a game for the working class, it\u2019s imperfect. Fans are often up for a fight in UK stadiums. Here, it\u2019s the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basketball has been a sport seen as \u2018cool\u2019 for a long time, and the fashion collaboration between Nike and Michael Jordan helped basketball dip into fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve continued: \u201cFootball is fairly big here now. It\u2019s got a way to go, but now that it\u2019s out there, and it\u2019s got the pull of some superstars in the American league, it\u2019s different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou mentioned LeBron James. He\u2019s seen as cool. Wayne Rooney? Steven Gerrard? They aren\u2019t. That\u2019s the difference in perception between the sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere, it\u2019s always been seen as pretty middle-class, kind of a girls\u2019 sport, but now that it\u2019s more mainstream, the American sporting culture has finally got a proper grip on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American-ified football has connotations of glitz and glamour where British football doesn\u2019t – yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PSG have looked<\/a> to the Jordan brand in an attempt to go towards the fashion side of things, and now that more teams are going down that route, it\u2019s clear that football as a whole is becoming more like basketball in terms of its image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s how it made its way into fashion on the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kerry added: \u201cIt was always going to come from the States, I think, because of how football is seen in England, but I also think the success of the women\u2019s team helped it be seen as more of a gender-neutral thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s probably true. I\u2019ve certainly seen more women and girls wearing football shirts since the Lionesses won the Euros in 2022, and it\u2019s probably not a stretch to suggest that\u2019s helped break down barriers, and allowed people of all genders to embrace some football influence on their wardrobe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it certainly seems that the \u2018boom\u2019 of soccer <\/em>is the main culprit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
