FA Cup glory, the Crazy Gang, displacement, rebirth, and a story like no other – the wonderful and wacky history of football in Wimbledon is hard to follow.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A continuation of Wimbledon FC, AFC Wimbledon have had a remarkable rise through the leagues since 2002, with the latest victory coming at Wembley to clinch promotion<\/a> to English football’s third tier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ve had a look through the archives to find their best-ever shirts – and yes, we’re including Wimbledon FC shirts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five best AFC Wimbledon shirts of all time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

5. 1988 FA Cup final<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here for being unique and iconic, this was peak Crazy gang. defeating the giants of Liverpool<\/a> – with the first penalty save at Wembley on the way – will never be forgotten in Wimbledon, and it marked the club’s only major trophy to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it wasn’t the first time we saw the Wombles of Wimbledon at Wembley, however – a 4-2 victory over nearby Sutton United in the 1963 FA Amateur Cup final takes that honour. Eddie Reynolds scored four headed goals in that game, something that has never been matched at the national stadium before or since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The club currently offer a re-issue version of this online and in the club’s physical store at Plough Lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. 2000-01 home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So simple, but that’s what makes this shirt so good. Unfortunately, though, it was a horrible time for the club, with the uncertainty enough to make fans create AFC Wimbledon a year later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. 1996-97 home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I love a good collar, and this is a theme that will keep coming up, to be honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway. this one is great, and I also have the honour of owning this shirt myself, which gives it bonus points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vinnie Jones, Neal Ardley and co. produced one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history with this shirt also, finishing eighth in the Premier League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. 2023-24 home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While not exactly the most ‘Wimbledon’, it saw some great moments, such as victory over Coventry City and a late win against a team from Buckinghamshire. However, what elevates this is the fact that it brought loads of Boca Juniors fans to London to watch games – I’ll let you work out why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s inspired by Parma shirts of the 90s and early 00s – and if you know the ones I mean, you can see that in the gradients. Cool shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. 2023-24 away<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The shirt the season before, made by Hummel, was billed as one that would stay for two years, as has been club tradition – but problems with the kit manufacturer’s UK distributors meant the club had to move to Umbro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, they pretty much <\/em>recreated the last one… but made it so much better. Look at the collar! The best the club have ever had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collar detailing, btw, is apparently inspired by the 1997-98 shirt, while the trim on the sleeves is the same as the 1990 England shirt. Very cool.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
