It starts with a feeling. You\u2019re walking home after a night out. Your mate\u2019s mid-rant about taxis, and then you both stop. A pigeon stands in the middle of the pavement. It\u2019s late – too late for pigeons to be loitering. But here it is – watching. Not moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You step forward. It pecks at the asphalt. You step again. It hops to the side, the same distance between you. Then it flies up to a lamppost right above your head, and just\u2026. stares. It just sits there. It looks like a bird. It acts like a bird. But something about it feels wrong – too timed like it was waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You laugh it off. Obviously, it\u2019s just a bird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But then again\u2026 is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Welcome to the world of \u2018Birds Aren\u2019t Real\u2019 theory – the viral conspiracy born in the U.S., but increasingly gaining popularity here in the UK. What started in 2017 as a protest prank by student Peter McIndoe to mock how wild conspiracy theories can go, has evolved into a digital-age satire, a cultural commentary, and – in some cases – a belief system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TikTok is full of videos of pigeons perched on wires for hours, staring through bedroom windows, or freezing mid-flight. Reddit users share clips of the same pigeon turning up in the same spot every day. The \u201cBirds Aren\u2019t Real\u201d TikTok account has over 837,000 followers, and the Reddit community counts more than half a million self-declared \u201cpatriots.\u201d The theory\u2019s taken root in the UK too, with its own Instagram accounts and websites pushing the narrative further. The more people joke about it, the more some start to genuinely wonder – what if there\u2019s something to it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the theory, birds – specifically pigeons – were replaced by surveillance drones during the Cold War. By now, most of the pigeons you see are high-tech spies. The new birds recharge on power lines and use their poop to track you. Absurd? Maybe. But it spread fast. \u201cIf it flies, it spies\u201d is now a meme, a mindset, and a movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To figure out where the joke ends and something real begins, I met with Milena Goryannaya, 18, a student in Sheffield, and a pigeon truther.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not about all birds,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I think some pigeons are drones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She shows me a clip – a pigeon standing completely motionless for six minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt didn\u2019t blink. Didn\u2019t shift. Just sat there. That didn\u2019t look like a real bird. Why wasn\u2019t it moving?\u201d Milena says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She started noticing patterns with other pigeons as well. Same pigeon. Same window. Every other morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSome weekdays I wake up early enough to do my morning routine before lectures,\u201d Milena says. \u201cOnce, I was eating my breakfast and looking out the window when I spotted a pigeon staring at me. I didn\u2019t give it any attention – until it repeated. I\u2019ve started noticing the same pigeon every morning around 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt first, I joked about it, but the more it kept happening, the more I started thinking\u2026 what if it\u2019s not a coincidence?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If pigeons are drones, why aren\u2019t they used to catch criminals? Wouldn\u2019t we know by now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMaybe they already do,\u201d Milena says. \u201cBut the government never says that out loud. Their role could be just like CCTV cameras – you don\u2019t see what they\u2019re doing until you\u2019re already caught. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPigeons are just one part of a bigger system. No one would question where the footage came from if they were told it was from a security camera. That\u2019s the whole point, right? The power is in the invisibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Milena, the idea isn\u2019t even new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGovernments have used pigeons in the war to carry secret messages across the borders,\u201d says Milena. \u201cIf we trusted them then, why not now? The technology has changed, but the idea hasn\u2019t. They\u2019re fast and everywhere. At that point, a pigeon drone makes more sense than another obvious CCTV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To understand the other side, I spoke to Professor Ben J Hatchwell, an evolutionary ecologist at the University of Sheffield – a person who\u2019s spent a career studying birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t the first time I\u2019ve heard this one,\u201d he says with a smile. \u201cAnd yes – birds are real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\u2019s patient and he\u2019s clear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTheir behaviour is too complex to fake,\u201d says Professor Hatchwell. \u201cIf you watch pigeons interacting, they behave normally, just like any other bird does. It\u2019s not something you could build – not now, and not back then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere are robot dogs and robot humans; they might be very intelligent, but they certainly wouldn\u2019t be able to behave in a natural manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, we pushed him on some of the theory\u2019s greatest hits. Why do pigeons perch on power lines?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey\u2019re just convenient,\u201d he says. \u201cFor them, a power line is another thing to perch on, just like a branch or a tree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the most famous question of all – why have so few of us ever seen a baby pigeon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey grow rapidly in the nest,\u201d says Professor Hatchwell. \u201cBy the time they leave, they\u2019re full-sized. You\u2019ve almost certainly seen a young pigeon – you just didn\u2019t know it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He chuckled. End of discussion? Not quite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a peregrine falcon nest in Sheffield just by the Diamond Building,\u201d he says. \u201cTop of St George\u2019s Church. You can watch CCTV. The main species they feed on is pigeons that they catch. When they catch them and tear them apart, they are flesh-and-blood. No wires. Not drones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he paused. Smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUnless maybe,\u201d he adds, \u201cthey just know which ones are real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Was he joking – probably?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that\u2019s how it starts. Thinking deeper, we are surrounded by pigeons most of the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo one questions a pigeon,\u201d Milena says. \u201cThey became so ordinary in our daily life, people are just used to them. They\u2019re everywhere. They can fly and get where cameras can\u2019t. Why wouldn\u2019t the government use that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t need to prove it to everyone. I just noticed these things. That\u2019s enough for me. I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if it turns out that pigeons are spying on people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe that\u2019s the point. \u201cPigeons Aren\u2019t Real\u201d isn\u2019t about making you believe. It\u2019s about making you stop, look, and wonder – what if?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professor Hatchwell is still confident. \u201cI\u2019ve studied birds and seen pigeons. Their behaviour, how they move, eat, and behave. If I found out that this theory is true, I\u2019ll have to recalibrate everything I think about the world,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet… the idea lives on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2025, rethinking everything is kind of normal. We live in a world where AI can fake your voice, and your phone knows what you\u2019ve been talking about 10 minutes ago. Is a pigeon drone really that much weirder?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just don\u2019t be surprised when the pigeon is there again tomorrow. Same lamppost. Same stare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And this time, maybe it\u2019s not just watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
