He pauses, then turns to drummer Toby Rees: \u201cDoes that even make sense?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s seconds since they walked into the recording studio on the University of Liverpool campus and the creative cogs are already turning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four music students from the up-and-coming band &#8216;Danny\u2019s Always Late&#8217; are here to start the recording process for their third single, which will form part of their first studio album later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite only forming in October 2023, the band \u2013 named after the punctuality of bassist Danny Woodhouse when they were starting out (\u201cIt\u2019s a get out of jail free card,\u201d he jokes) \u2013 have already gained momentum both digitally and on Liverpool\u2019s iconic music scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"650\" data-src=\"https:\/\/illuminatedmag.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/05\/Dannysimg-1024x650.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1717 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/650;width:629px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Left to Right: Leo Dunn (lead singer), Jude Bennett (guitarist), Rhys Busby (producer), Danny Woodhouse (bassist), Toby Rees (drummer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their alt-rock debut single, \u201870Mph\u2019, has received 20,000 international streams since it was released in February. Not platinum-selling, but for a group of 19-to-21-year-old independent musicians in the North West, it\u2019s a number they had \u201cnever even imagined\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A place on a Spotify playlist drove the spike in listenership \u2013 a fortunate flip-side to a medium sometimes criticised<br>for its algorithms and royalties. \u201cI don\u2019t think we would have come to selling 20,000 CDs so it\u2019s a really weird comparison,\u201d Woodhouse explains. \u201cThere\u2019s pros and cons [of streaming], but I think there are more pros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s thousands of people listening who we have no idea who they are, and we\u2019ve never even been near where they are,\u201d adds guitarist Jude Bennett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital success has boosted ticket sales too. Early gigs at venues such as The Jacaranda &#8211; renowned for its role in the early days of the Beatles \u2013 they say generally attracted a dozen or so mates loitering at the back of sparse rooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However their post-\u201870Mph\u2019 headliner at nearby The Zanzibar &#8211; previously host to the likes of Noel Gallagher \u2013 drew a 150-strong crowd who echoed the chorus back to the stage, a moment Dunn had dreamt of \u201csince he knew what music was\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember thinking back to writing the song in my room, and then now there\u2019s actually people singing it\u2026\u201d he recalls, trailing off as he shakes his head with bewilderment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong community within the historic music city is another factor in their trajectory. As Rees says: \u201cEveryone wants to make it as a band, but it\u2019s not making it instead of us, it\u2019s making it with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we are doing well, we\u2019re going to give others support acts and pull them up. Then if we\u2019ve got a gig, they\u2019ll bring their friends. This community really makes you feel appreciated and supported. It\u2019s one of the things I\u2019ll never take for granted.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woodhouse continues: \u201cIt\u2019s not a competition. Music is a friendly community. That\u2019s what you lose these days as everyone\u2019s against each other venue-wise.
