She was told it wasn\u2019t for people like her, Black, female, Nigerian. So she became a lawyer instead. It was safer, more respectable, the choice her immigrant parents could understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-72dac05aa40d5d4bf8037b5f6f604364\">But some dreams don\u2019t stay quiet.<br>It wasn\u2019t until her 40s that she permitted herself to return to her true calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-eaa6c2ea282523bd05b52334b4b34210\">\u201cYou get to a point in life where you think, life\u2019s too short. You don\u2019t need to please anyone anymore,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8926664413c201463bb4c4738ec611aa\">Today, she founded&nbsp;<strong>Utopia Theatre<\/strong>, one of the UK\u2019s most culturally dynamic African and diaspora storytelling platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"537\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/heritagemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-24-at-04.54.01-1024x537.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-602 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/537;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Utopia Theatre<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-411055a69e5c7185d65f63bfe0fb068f\">Born in Nigeria and raised in the UK, Mojisola grew up between two worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8b850bb0084f04ef9557aa177fa4814c\">\u201cYou learn to speak two languages,\u201d she says\u2014\u201cnot just Yoruba and English, but the more subtle dialects of cultural navigation: when to blend in, when to code-switch, and eventually, when to refuse either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-97b39064b94de4c151b7a57d858e607c\">Her story unfolds at the rich and sometimes painful intersection of race, gender, heritage, and ambition. Her dual identity, Nigerian and British, has never been a backdrop. It\u2019s been the stage itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-068a74dc869878f580e7e63dd8aedb57\">Growing up in the UK, she learned quickly that belonging was conditional. She remembers the unspoken rules: be grateful, be quiet, be twice as good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d76fc502e7d0fc5b93e67efd60d215ca\">\u201cTo even get called for an interview,\u201d she explains, \u201cI had to be 50% more prepared, 50% more qualified. That\u2019s the price of entry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5fe4e14f13ae8acd5af0b22243ed03f4\">But instead of breaking her, that pressure became fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-40248cd7f0adb820d67c7f3d4ca23443\">\u201cYou walk into the room, and you must leave them thinking: I was wrong about Black people. I was wrong about women. I was wrong about Africa. That\u2019s my goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14493738dc4eb15ed19e87c7db795f22\">Pressure, Resistance, Reinvention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a0ee6a857c4a5d3de861ca548d7fcafa\">British theatre is notoriously white and male. Even now, only a small fraction of artistic leadership roles are held by Black women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-aad726c82541342b5676115396c8566c\">\u201cPeople don\u2019t think you can do it,\u201d she says plainly. \u201cEspecially if you\u2019re Black. Especially if you\u2019re a woman. Especially if you\u2019re older.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-994298bcf6c285cac4842e9907b8d93c\">When she entered drama school in her 40s, Mojisola was often the only Black woman in the room and always the eldest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b8688f7917b535f8e85b96c74d6d5835\">\u201cThey almost made it clear: You\u2019ve wasted your time. You\u2019re not going to make it in this industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4747b7da8bd7c959db5dfbbb262e36d1\">But one lecturer, Claire Hines, changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-12e7caf8f0a7c47b36cbd3b74ef893a0\">\u201cShe said: If you\u2019re an artist, make art. Don\u2019t wait for permission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4889fe70a81f5b404a72330201773d3d\">That seed became <strong>Utopia Theatre<\/strong>, funded with the last portion of Mojisola\u2019s student loan, rehearsed in public parks, and staged in borrowed rooms. A theatre born not of privilege, but of necessity and defiance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ff2bfa3995ed1d5613c09ba9e9eefc36\">At Utopia Theatre, the stories are different. I want to show that our stories belong in the centre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-75202cbabb3e8e1f65fbcd501873b2a5\">Whether adapting Yoruba folk tales in Sheffield or staging contemporary African dramas for UK audiences, Mojisola\u2019s vision of \u201cutopia\u201d is one where no one has to leave parts of themselves behind at the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c0493f153131f9050716f10f6f0a0f75\"><strong>Breaking Barriers, Building Legacy<\/strong> of women<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-56a3119d48e25fff70f30b427647b1ba\">Mojisola doesn\u2019t pretend it\u2019s been easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-909c9101bf8cfbc10a68f6e744adaf62\">\u201cI\u2019ve had to work twice as hard,\u201d she says. \u201cThere are things men, especially white men, get away with in rehearsal rooms that would never be accepted from me. But eventually, your reputation speaks. You\u2019re running that house. You\u2019re in charge. You don\u2019t wait to be asked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b94aa4a4826ea11c5b5d2f6b840a25bf\">She brings that same force to her creative leadership: firm, visionary, unapologetic, and deeply generational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-885d207811d9e35b55acdfafb1e3a820\">\u201cI\u2019m not building this for me alone. I\u2019m doing this so my grandchildren can walk into spaces without having to prove their humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b695fac4ad70a0c1b5b77f8fe5f2b376\"><strong>Belonging, Displacement, and Power<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7d568ba706432daf6deba36d2fee792e\">In Mojisola\u2019s work, the question of belonging is not abstract, it\u2019s visceral.<br>What does it mean to belong in a land that constantly questions your legitimacy?<br>What does it mean to be from <em>here<\/em> and <em>there<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a5b1c87e5c19b06e330954a560609f7e\">\u201cYou never really stop feeling like you\u2019re in-between,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I\u2019ve learned that in-between is not a weakness\u2014it\u2019s a vantage point. I can see both sides. I can translate. I can challenge both cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-04315ef65905bdbc7a1851e820670289\">That ability\u2014the \u201cdouble vision\u201d of diaspora has become her greatest strength. It allows her to straddle tradition and innovation, ancestral wisdom and modern activism, with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-459bc51b8d78885f9579fde7aaac08cb\">And to young women growing up between worlds, Mojisola offers this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a7c9a233bb8ce3820a8e6c95627cf9a9\">\u201cYou bring a rare blend to every room. Don\u2019t shrink it. Use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7c403e0136945b6842041afa480f1e81\">Despite the barriers, Mojisola\u2019s message is radical in its optimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cbb568ec42a05106f0a76cdd3ba3f14d\">\u201cYou can be anything,\u201d she says, but not without grit, resilience, and relentless self-belief. \u201cThe world isn\u2019t fair. But someone has to make it fairer. Someone has to hold the baton until the next runner builds their momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-76af0d0707b00aff254c7c2f475774e5\">And that\u2019s the work. Legacy isn\u2019t just about what you leave behind; it\u2019s about who you lift as you rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c0a6bafe079097bf945e046a9e20fa67\">\u201cIf I go into a room and overperform, turn up earlier, prepare harder, it\u2019s not just for me. It\u2019s for the girl who comes after me. I want her to walk into that space and find respect already waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1f4540ed77d3d73cc1343d02cd85ae55\"><strong>Dream With Your Whole Self<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e8fe772173fffd1056d4223c2c634622\">Mojisola Elufowoju is not just rewriting British theatre. She\u2019s reshaping the narrative of who belongs in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c56093fb47e3ac401f696d80881e6fe7\"><strong>Black. Woman. Nigerian. British. Leader. Artist. Mother. Director. Dreamer.<br><\/strong>No single label can contain her. And that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c6c582dee2943367d225f7826055e500\">To every young Black girl trying to find her place in a Western world that wasn\u2019t built with her in mind, Mojisola says:<br><strong>Dream with your whole self.
