Notably, Sarah\u2019s persistent advocacy led to the enforcement of a new FGM act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah McCulloch, 70, from Bedfordshire, founded the Agency for Culture and Change Management (ACCM). For most of her life, she has prioritised cultivating change to shift the narrative of Female genital mutilation (FGM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/heritagemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2025\/06\/Sarah-photo-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1968 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/800;width:174px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sarah McCulloch receiving award for celebrating African Culture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFemale genital mutilation is about honour; many cultures believe if you\u2019ve been circumcised, then you have honour, the community respects you, and if you don\u2019t get circumcised, you can be dishonoured by the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFGM was started centuries ago by men who thought that women were too promiscuous, \u201d says Sarah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her journey in empowering women and preserving their human rights has been fruitful. However, it has not been easy to encourage women to rethink their deeply embedded harmful cultural practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FGM, by definition, is the cutting of the vulva for non-medical reasons.<br>This practice is perceived by several women in different cultures as a rite of passage, a necessity for being considered pure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its cultural roots stem from centuries and are practised in several regions of Africa and some countries in the Middle East and Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"686\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/heritagemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2025\/06\/IMG_2357-686x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1872 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 686px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 686\/1024;width:219px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by: Susan Kirsch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What inspired Sarah\u2019s journey to liberate these women was a documentary on Channel 4 which highlighted a city where communities were circumcising their daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started talking to Somali women and I was horrified with what I heard, I just thought it was barbaric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo I decided to set up ACCM. I started looking into this practice to find those who had been through it. The women I was talking to seemed to have physical and psychological health problems. I got abuse, threats, with people that thought they were protecting their culture, but I just carried on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spoke to different communities, we set up an FGM clinic in Sheffield through the NHS to help start treating the women, women started to come forward,\u201d says Sarah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2000 Sarah highlighted the case of a family taking their daughter abroad to have FGM performed on her. This triggered the beginning of Sarah\u2019s pivotal advocacy to change the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The circumcision only covered FGM in in the UK. Sarah and her team encouraged a government member to change the law to be more effective and were successful in doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah herself was a member on the panel and was joyed to see that a new act had been enforced, creating tighter laws on FGM that would prevent it happening as frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah connected with the women in these communities and educated them on the physical and mental harms of FGM and its roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also came across that some of these women were in forced marriages, we discovered that some of them were child brides, we came across honor based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI continued doing this work because I\u2019m really passionate about it,\u201d says Sarah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon moving across the UK, she encountered more and more diverse cultural communities that performed FGM on women and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of work around the UK and now some communities are not doing it because they see that they\u2019ll be sent to prison and that they could lose their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYoung people now are aware of the issues and they\u2019re challenging their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHopefully more change will come, it\u2019s taking time but it\u2019s on the way,\u201d says Sarah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With advocates like Sarah, there can be hope for the future generations of women and young girls to thrive in communities that no longer conform to such ideologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting an end to FGM begins with unveiling the truth behind traditions which have been upheld and maintained in cultures for so long, but it can be done.<\/p>\n<span class=\"et_bloom_bottom_trigger\"><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For one noble advocate, several years of her life have been dedicated to liberating women from the toxic tradition of female gential mutilation. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":141,"featured_media":1871,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[27,147,148,40,49],"class_list":["post-1854","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-culture-and-history","tag-culture","tag-fgm","tag-rituals","tag-traditions","tag-women"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
