I wasn&#8217;t sure how to begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut back then in the early 2000s, in a mid-size town in northern Poland, diversity was non-existent, finding anyone who can do alternative hairstyles was basically impossible,\u201d says Kamila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"979\" height=\"711\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/heritagemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2025\/06\/IMG_2249.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1644 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 979px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 979\/711;width:421px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kamila, Owner of Royal Headz Dreadlocks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite locs not being as popular at the time and there not being a huge community of people with locs, Kamila recognised the beauty in them and was sure to achieve her desired style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Once I left secondary school and gained more freedom and independence, I decided to express my admiration for Black culture by wearing my hair differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Locs have always been a symbol of freedom for me, especially freedom to be your true self, the one that shouts  &#8216;I don&#8217;t care what you think about me!&#8217;, I naturally became more confident and accepting of myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI separated my soft Caucasian hair into sections and started twisting them. My hair was saved by a lovely chap, Martin, a fellow student I met at university. He had beautiful, thick, blond locs; he crocheted my hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was finally able to look after my own hair.
