{"id":1507,"date":"2025-06-03T13:41:05","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T12:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/heritagemag\/?p=1507"},"modified":"2025-06-03T13:41:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T12:41:08","slug":"the-cultural-heritage-of-sarees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/heritagemag\/2025\/06\/03\/the-cultural-heritage-of-sarees\/","title":{"rendered":"The cultural heritage of sarees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9c93b630ac7f01dba603e07cf14c8224\">Charlotte Colley talks with Sarees Designer Rashika Sharma about the threads of femininity, discipline and community interwoven throughout India\u2019s national garment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6ca9f529ff131101b42e933f631e6c80\">She says: \u201cThe first time I wore a saree, and I felt the presence, the power, I wasn&#8217;t just wearing six\u00a0yards of cloth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cea9b12dbe1ad56c12760489dca8329c\">Rashika Sharma established her brand in 2020 after working with designers such as Gaurav&nbsp; Gupta and has since expanded to worldwide capitals, including London and New York.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-db5c0d7658bffa3557f1ff58ec387bc1\">Despite catering more to a western audience, Rashika still specialises in Indian and \u2018Indo western\u2019 women\u2019s occasion wear, committed to incorporating aesthetics that honour the regions of her home country.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e5d4f126dcb7796a647334b36a72f8dc\">Rashika Sharma, an Indian fashion designer from Delhi, wore her first inherited saree when she was 17 at her high school graduation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-95a2a1d00bd5edf587d380c28e5de7cc\">Like many other South-East Asian women, wearing a saree signifies familial bonds, culture and womanly strength.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-08544ea7b283621caf37c55a5530928e\">Sarees, spelt in the Indian English version, are perceived as links to ancestry and are often passed down generations from mother to daughter on their wedding day or when stepping into womanhood.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9275038229fb496d3ff8d6ac22ee209c\">Rashika says: \u201cMy mother got our family saree when she was getting married from my grandmother, and now when I get married, I&#8217;ll have that same saree passed down to me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-474753835da9bbc41b577651a28ec9e6\">\u201cI&#8217;ll add heavy embroidery, so I look like a bride, but I\u2019ll have my mother&#8217;s side of heritage&nbsp; with me, to hopefully receive blessings and have an equally happy married life as these women&nbsp; have lived.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11411610987689c28e4ed9e7798d0a64\">The alterations made to a family saree tell stories about their ancestors, who often added embroidery that aligned with their beliefs, such as a lotus flower symbolising the power of life.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ac906dffe8b45bc206d6013ac47a0264\">She adds: \u201cThey&#8217;re not just clothes but woven heirlooms, and they hold different stories and memories for families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-81d7a2f7424bd9b550ce9cc9ae8cc5bf\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a tradition meeting personal expression, each woman brings her own story and how she&nbsp; wears it.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6d46d1f75f1916479c6057f58f7ed374\">Whilst Sarees follow down the maternal line, they often also preserve heartfelt memories for the men of the family.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4f93dd0dfa68dbb8e48dc6bf3abd077f\">Men typically gift sarees out of love or respect to the special women in their lives, and more often gifted as a wedding tradition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-80dbc13473a23fc48a58ec27d2a6cc98\">Rashika said, \u201cI wish I could articulate my father&#8217;s reaction when he saw me in my mother\u2019s saree. He said I looked just like my mother when he saw her for the first time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-98dff1abf509c67f1f7b187c1809b556\">\u201cNot just for the women of the house, but also for the men. In India, for example, a common tradition is for a man\u2019s first paycheck to be spent bestowing his mother with a saree as a sign of gratitude and financially giving back.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-53c23baf22c3b5df3f0aecaf0e817363\">The significance of sarees is also reflected in their colour, an aspect designers like Rashika are dedicated to preserving, even while embracing Western influences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-26946e245cf40f8decf69ef583b4bf4e\">In North India, red is the wedding colour for symbolising marital bliss and harmony, while in\u00a0South India, it represents fertility and purity associated with the Hindu Goddess Durga.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-15efb34713d6661298ef2dc5437f62ac\">\u201cFor many women, wearing a saree is a way of connecting with their roots. They represent\u00a0 tradition, heritage, regional identities, where everybody has a different community.\u201d Rashika\u00a0says\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c9a4bc1472c3c2069ef487285732c894\">\u201cWhen they wear a saree, they&#8217;re representing an identity that they belong to a different kind&nbsp; of \u2018tribe\u2019.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2f5e0ef4d380f4fb9f53c56fab707081\">In the southern state of Kerala, white and gold sarees, known as Kasavu sarees, represent purity and harmony between Kerala\u2019s diverse communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5779ef647c66e334bd07f110d3da3360\">The gold embroidery and borders embody wealth and mark sacred rituals, such as Onam,&nbsp; the harvest festival of Kerala.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-070771c3f9e6921ea7bd6a08a82bf3ba\">\u00a0However, in northern and eastern Indian states such as West Bengal, white sarees are worn for 13 days during the mourning period by widows out of respect for the deceased.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-04e0fd0badd487ad7e93c5a0a3d02463\">Rashika says: \u201cWe are in the same community and country, but we have different cultures altogether.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8a6d1bc3549434e0edeb89fd782b608f\">A saree&#8217;s symbolism extends beyond just its fabric, its embroidery is also a testament to the artistic craftsmanship of the designer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"990\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/heritagemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2025\/06\/Screenshot-2025-06-02-at-22.44.33-990x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1511 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 990px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 990\/1024;width:666px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image courtesy: Rashika Sharma, all rights reserved.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bfd58b403f36b03b2b097336a9c51276\">Originating in the village of Lucknow, India, Chikankari is a popular embroidery motif which involves white on white handmade floral patterns that would offer women both economic and social empowerment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19aa4756b657ec45a60a9c0d53797908\">Traditionally, Chikankari embroidery was reserved for royalty, but is now used for events ranging from weddings, festivals or daily wear.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-01ba72e6e26c9c1154d6ee0910cfd1e8\">Rashika says: \u201cWe take the ancestral motifs from paintings or the artwork inside the Taj&nbsp; Mahal, and we keep on developing them, so we produce different kinds of embroidery inspired by them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-58d46763c0b401e13b536596dd829f45\">\u201cWe picked up the scenes they painted on our monuments because we have a lot of rich&nbsp; cultural history, and then we depict the art, and we keep on improvising it generation by&nbsp; generation in our garments.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-adff3b028bc2772b79bcb1a61748893c\">Zardozi, a technique Rashika uses in her sarees, is a gold thread embroidery mainly used for ceremonial wear to symbolise opulence.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f964ab7c58c92c1fec5ddd72ad1c6237\">The technique first gained popularity in the Mughal Empire in the 17th century when saree designers would use real gold.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d2f20e4d170252339f70b471f4240067\">Today, Zardozi is practised across South Asia, including in Pakistan, Iran, and Bangladesh,&nbsp; They can weigh 15 kilograms or more.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-aa1e90a06e739891fd5a60ef12a0a126\">Beyond the adornments, the way a saree is draped speaks to the character and identity of the wearer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b8147d9ee7e0e295aad2ddfb3e9ee2dc\">The art of draping a saree is connected to both feminine beauty by framing a woman&#8217;s curves, but also demonstrates a level of discipline.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b143b0d8b7b0b27157d59fb8299649d4\">\u201cThe more polished the draping is, the more it says how disciplined you are, how feminine&nbsp; you are and how graceful you are and is seen as,\u201d Rashika says&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-77dee96cd26c9a49e7fe2aa00c3b3291\">\u201cIt shows if you have the discipline to wear the saree correctly, then you have the discipline&nbsp; and you have the patience to manage a household.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bc3471955925db6770a21ee8cbd7971e\">Regional distinctions are also expressed in their unique draping styles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8e1d358e4f6367dbd296a89f7a2916fe\">The Nauvari saree from Maharashtra in West India is worn by wrapping the 9 yards, not the typical 6 yards, of fabric around the body and tucking it between the legs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-30e4c6c1dca56325fd289f45c5d29cef\">The draping style pays homage to the women warriors who wore it this way to be able to ride horses and fight alongside men, and it stands today to represent a strong female spirit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17de06b307ef5b680e5288f3d8f26948\">Sarees and other South Asian garments remain links to individual and regional cultural heritage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-34b35308190afacea31a6a1476f99f1b\">As South Asian fashion increasingly influences modern Western trends, such as a dupatta being rebranded as a Scandinavian scarf, it remains vital to recognise the culture behind these garments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e8cffd3426a578889e1d9ad67eb28b98\">Rashika says: \u201cI feel proud when I say Indian fashion is finally getting recognised, a Saree is a major source of inspiration for designers worldwide for elements like intricate beading and draped materials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-24434035665ad9e05ae3e17a652a9710\">\u201cWhen international designers take inspiration from our culture, it affirms an identity, and it&nbsp; also helps shift the narrative that a lot of people used to believe, that Indian fashion is more costume.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-81da228e35639c06c347088f1c041cc5\">But with inspiration comes a required level of education to avoid appropriating the culture it comes from, especially from Western designers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9ed2e50ada543918b3b4ed39f7f1cb61\">\u201cWe must be educated about these crafts and garments to avoid cultural appropriation or disrespect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1ae064f9ac06804aff06867e4d0cfd4d\">\u201cWhen cultures have historically been mocked and marginalised for wearing those exact&nbsp; same garments, people need to take the inspiration correctly, not just no longer mock us.\u201d<\/p>\n<span class=\"et_bloom_bottom_trigger\"><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charlotte Colley talks with Saree Designer Rashika Sharma about the threads of femininity, discipline and community interwoven throughout India\u2019s national garment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":228,"featured_media":1508,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[27,29,28,108,40,49],"class_list":["post-1507","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fashion","tag-culture","tag-fashion","tag-heritage","tag-sarees","tag-traditions","tag-women"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
