The largest language learning exchange in the UK
By Filipa Justino

Every week, various cities in the UK meet up and exchange languages, share their cultures with each other, and make new friends. This is the UK’s largest language learning community- Language Exchanges.

Starting in Leeds in 2014, the event began with the passion of getting people together from all walks of life. It is now a weekly event in over 12 cities in the UK.

One of their motives is to connect locals to internationals- helping create a better sense of community and promoting language learning in an easy and sociable way.

One of the regular hosts of the events in Sheffield, Melita Carty, said:  “It really has helped me with my language learning journey, the things I’ve learnt from other people but also what I have been able to share with others.”

Melita has been coming to these events for nearly three years now, after finding she didn’t have much of an opportunity to socialise during the pandemic. She thinks practising languages with others is a great way to stay motivated and meet new people.

She said: “There’s so many languages and so little time- if I could learn them all, I would!”
