In the heart of the Indian Ocean lies a paradise – Zanzibar. The archipelago situated just off the coast of the Tanzania has become a prominent melting pot of diverse cultures, traditions and flavours, constituting a beautiful blend of African, Arabic and Indian influences.

A typical day in this out-of-this-world tropical island promises a sensory overload. From exploring the historic Stone Town known globally for its intricate labyrinthine streets and ornate architecture, it is sprinkled with traditional restaurants where the locals and travellers can savour the tantalising flavours of the local cuisine. On a trip to the beach, you can then get immersed in the tranquillity of its crystal-clear waters.

When I first meet Hassan Mahmood, a man originally from Zanzibar who now resides in the UK, he offered told me about the unparalleled beauty his country has to offer. He confessed that emigrating to the UK has left an unbearable void in his heart and his soul yearns for his permanent return to the soil of Zanzibar.

Recently he has given in to this inner call and embarked on a nostalgic journey back to his birthplace where he hopes to reignite his love for the island and its people.

Hassan recalls the sentiment that filled his heart as he wandered through the narrow streets of Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar where he spent the most of his childhood years. He tells me of the ”close friendships he developed with the children around the block and the deep sense of community one can experience here”. Hassan tells me that ”being outside was his favourite activity as every time he stepped under the sky he was welcomed by a symphony of scents and sounds. Walking through the cobbled streets would expose him to a delightful aroma of spices filled the air”, which now remind him Zanzibar’s rich culinary heritage.

Hassan goes on to tell me that ”Zanzibar cuisine is a true reflection of the archipelago’s diverse cultural heritage”. From aromatic pilau rice, cooked with a blend of spices such as cardamon, cinnamon and cloves, often combined with other choices of tender meat or vegetables or to mouth watering seafood curries simmered in a rich and creamy coconut- based sauce infused with spices, Hassan promises ”it is an intricate food tasting journey for anyone looking to experience his homeland delicacies”. Venturing beyond the bustling markets, Hassan narrates that these vibrant displays of island’s cultural tapestry offer a palpable sensory- rich experience to anyone visiting. From the moment he would step into the maze of narrow alleys and lanes filled with an array of sights, sounds and scents, Hassan found himself mesmerised by

Zanzibar’s world of bustling energy and colourful abundance.

He describes that ”these markets are a representation of the Swahili, Arabic and Indian influences predominant within the island, where vendors sell a dazzling array of goods, from exotic spices and handmade crafts to fresh produce and seafood caught that very morning”. Hassan’s account of the lively atmosphere here makes me visualise the cacophony of bargaining sounds complemented by deep and high-pitched voices of the locals, infused by the enticing aromas of street food being prepared and the lively chatter of locals and tourists alike.

Hassan cannot recollect hic childhood experiences without referring to the ”pristine beaches that lined the coast”. Like most families in Zanzibar, Hassan ”cherished his time spend at the beach every week next to the turquoise waters glistening under the tropical sun”, inviting him to take a dip and explore the underwater wonders that Zanzibar is famous for. The ”warm, golden sand provided him with the perfect setting for relaxation, free- of- cost play and strengthening life-long bonds”.

He nostalgically smiles ”at the memory of laughter that filled the air as families enjoyed their picnics, beach games under the shade of swaying palm trees”. Once he reached the adolescence age, the sandcastles build under the gentle breeze of the sea were replaced with snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs and swimming with dolphins, serving as a joyful tradition for him and his friends during the final years spent in Zanzibar. Hassan goes on and emphasises ”that what sets Zanzibar apart from other tropical destinations is its authenticity and warmth of its people. The locals, known for their genuine hospitality and welcoming nature, offer a glimpse into their way of life”.

Hassan’s family is among those who have embraced the growing tourism industry on the island, running a small guesthouse in Kendwa Rocks, Zanzibar that provides visitors with a home away from home experience. Following his return, Hassan discovered that his home place has become a reputable global travel destination and was pleasantly surprised by the realisation that despite its increasing popularity among travellers, Zanzibar remains a haven for locals looking to raise their children in the same traditional environment.

As Hassan reconnected with his roots, he now ”believes that be island maintains that same peaceful atmosphere he was once familiar with, where locals and foreigners now coexist harmoniously”. Thus, ”he highlights that whether you’re a solo traveller, a group of friends, or a family seeking an unforgettable vacation, Zanzibar offers a safe and inviting environments for all. With its pristine beaches, cultural treasures, and welcoming community, this hidden gem has all the ingredients for a memorable vacation, regardless of age”.

As I conclude my conversation with Hassan, I sympathise with the melancholic allure of this exchange and envy the deep connection he developed with Zanzibar. And I walk away from this exchange with the conviction that whether you’re a young adventurer seeking thrilling water sports or a seasoned traveller looking to unwind on sandy shores, Zanzibar has something for everyone. If your curiosity has been prompted same as mine, you can join Hassan and countless others in rediscovering the beauty of this island paradise – where every sunset paints a new masterpiece, and every smile reflects the true spirit of Zanzibar.
