Discover the lesser-known cultural and historical riches of Sanya, southwest point of China, from the traditions of the indigenous Li and Miao peoples to the ancient folklore surrounding this tropical paradise.

Located in the warm embrace of the South China Sea, Sanya stands as a testament to the enduring allure of Hainan Island. This is not the China of bustling metropolises and towering skyscrapers, rather, Sanya offers a glimpse into a rich variety of cultural heritage and natural beauty, a paradise often overlooked by Western travellers. Through the eyes of the local Li and Miao peoples who are part of China’s 55 minority groups and the lens of ancient folklore, let us journey into the soul of Sanya, a locale that promises an authentic Asian culture exploration.

For cultured travellers, Sanya is a revelation, an invitation to delve into the unseen, the unheard, and the inexperienced. Here, nature and culture intertwine, offering pathways to discover hidden stories and traditions that have thrived for centuries.

The heritage of Hainan’s Li and Miao people

In the shaded tranquillity of her workshop in Sanya, Qiumei Zhou, a master Li weaver, guides her loom with practised hands. “Each pattern we create is steeped in history, a silent ode to our ancestors,” she says, “Weaving is more than an art; it’s a form of storytelling and spiritual expression, keeping the narrative of her people vibrant and relevant.”

Beneath the verdant canopy of Hainan, the Li and Miao peoples continue to preserve the vibrant mosaic of their cultures. The Li, known for their intricate textile work, and the Miao, celebrated for their exquisite silver jewellery, not only preserve centuries-old traditions but also connect deeply with the land that sustains them.

“To us, these pieces are more than mere decoration. They carry our stories, safeguard our spirits, and celebrate our cultural identity,” Guozheng Wu, a skilled Miao silversmith, displaying his latest creation – a finely wrought silver bracelet – says, “This piece is a testament to our enduring spirit and artistic ingenuity. The meticulous designs, passed down through generations, serve as a wearable history of our people, reflecting resilience and creativity dated from our ancestors.”

To recognise the profound significance of these traditional arts, both community-driven and governmental initiatives have been put in place to support these ancient crafts. These initiatives not only cultivate cultural pride among the youth but also safeguard Hainan’s unique heritage, inviting travellers to experience and help preserve these invaluable cultural legacies.

Revisiting Ancient Tales

Sanya’s identity is deeply rooted in ancient lore and legends, shaping the character of this tropical paradise. Among these is the “Deer Turns Head” story, which narrates the enchanting saga of a hunter and a deer, which culminates at the picturesque Luhuitou Park, where the deer turns into a beautiful woman. The park named after the legend encapsulates the mystical allure of Sanya in its scenic vistas and cultural depth

Ziming Zhang, deputy director of market operations centre of Sanya Luhuitou park, says: “This tale transcends mere storytelling; it’s a mirror reflecting our communal ethos and our intrinsic connection to the natural world. I want more people to learn about the past and the story of this city and its unseen culture.” This story, among others, is commemorated at various culturally significant sites across Sanya, reflecting the community’s core values and their profound bond with nature.

These landmarks, including temples, parks, and sculptures, are more than just tourist spots; they offer visitors a chance to explore the rich blend of history and myth that defines the area. These sites bring livelihood to Sanya’s deep cultural roots, welcoming those eager to explore and experience.

The chickens, nourished on banyan seeds, develop a distinctive taste that’s a culinary representation of our region.” says Mr Chai. This commitment to traditional methods and local ingredients is central to Sanya’s culinary

“Our food culture here is very vibrant; we have a deep bond between our people and the environment. The Hele crab is not just food; it’s a celebration of our connection to the sea,” says Chef Ming Mei, known for her exquisite seafood creations, “This dish, like many others in Sanya, tells the story of the island’s relationship with its surrounding waters. Without nature and a balanced environment, our local cuisine will not be the same.”

Through its cuisine, Sanya invites visitors to taste its culture, offering a deeper understanding
and appreciation of this enchanting island paradise.
