In the lively streets of Vietnam in Southeast Asia, the scent of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, attracting visitors to dive into the country’s vibrant coffee culture.

From the northern highlands to the southern delta, Vietnamese coffee has become a crucial part of the country’s culture, with a history that spans centuries and a unique flavour that sets it apart from the rest of the world.

Vietnamese coffee

The origins of Vietnamese coffee can be traced back to the late 19th century when French colonists first brought coffee plants to the country. Gradually, the local climate and soil, along with the ingenuity of Vietnamese farmers, led to the development of a distinct coffee variety that has become a source of national pride.

To this day, Vietnamese coffee is renowned for its robust, full-bodied flavour, often characterised by notes of chocolate, caramel and a subtle sweetness.

The preparation of Vietnamese coffee is an art form in itself with traditional brewing techniques that have been passed down through generations.

The iconic Vietnamese coffee filter, known as a phin is an essential component, slowly dripping the brew into a glass filled with sweetened condensed milk. The delicious blend of strong, fragrant coffee and creamy milk is a wonderful tasting experience.

How to make Vietnamese coffee

Vietnamese coffee is also deeply ingrained within the cultural identity of the country. Cafés, known as cà phê, serve as hubs of social activity where people gather to catch up with friends, conduct business or simply enjoy a peaceful moment amid the hustle and bustle of daily life.

These cozy, often open-air cafés provide a glimpse into the local way of life, with their colourful décor, lively conversations and the ever-present soundtrack of clinking cups and sizzling condensed milk.

Delving into the coffee culture of Vietnam is more than just enjoying a delicious beverage.  It is an exploration of the country’s profound history, diverse landscapes and the warm hospitality of its people.

Whether sipping a strong, black cà phê đen or trying the creamy, indulgent cà phê sữa đá, visitors to Vietnam will discover that the humble cup of coffee holds the power to transport them to the heart of this captivating Southeast Asian nation.
