Follow us for updates. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Qjw94xMvMs\">pic.twitter.com\/Qjw94xMvMs<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Doctor Magazine (@TheDrMagazine) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheDrMagazine\/status\/1989246911472365880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 14, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are doctors striking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Alexander Browne, 25, currently working in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals as a FY2 doctor explained why the strikes are so important at a time of crisis for the NHS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cOf course doctors are aware that all public service workers are facing struggles with pay and all public sectors are underfunded. It\u2019s just that doctors were facing some of the biggest cuts of any sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resident doctors are fully trained doctors with up to eight years of experience, and account for around 50% of doctors working in the NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that during the strikes, NHS services will be under a significant amount of pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Browne is looking to go into anaesthetics when he finishes his second year of foundation, however due to rising competition ratio\u2019s, this might prove difficult for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe competition ratio is 14 to 1, so that means there&#8217;s 14 fully qualified doctors applying for one training post to become an anaesthetist and these competition ratios keep increasing and increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo it&#8217;s also just making the government aware that fully qualified doctors that have trained and practised in the UK given years of their life do deserve to have employment opportunities and that people shouldn&#8217;t be faced by unemployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve also got friends who have just left medicine altogether because they couldn&#8217;t get a job, which I think is just crazy when there\u2019s shortages and massive waiting lists,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;The job isn&#39;t done. Resident Doctors (@BMAResidents) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BMAResidents\/status\/1989250305691906247?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 14, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Resident doctors went on strike 11 times in 15 months between March 2023 and June 2024, but have only done so once this year, in July.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of them will be taking part in today\u2019s strike\u2019s, which will be the 13th of their campaign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Browne added: \u201cPatient safety is a major concern and no doctor taking part in any strikes wants to wish harm on their patients or wishes ill towards anybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough unfortunately it is kind of a necessary step to take in order to make the government pay attention to what we&#8217;re saying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the BMA, resident doctor pay is down by 22.3% in real value, since 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week&#8217;s NHS figures also highlighted the struggle these doctors are facing daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It stated that in October 54,000 patients waited more than 12 hours for a bed in emergency departments, nearly 10% more than the same month last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Browne explained that he is looking to move to Australia for a couple of years to \u2018get some time away from the NHS\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cI want to live in a hot country for a little bit and work in a healthcare system that&#8217;s not under quite so much pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlso to allow me some time to build up those points for a portfolio to allow me to get into training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resident doctors have their own portfolios where they are required to do additional work outside of paid hours to appear more attractive to employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he first began medical school, these issues were not something he expected to have to experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you get here, you don\u2019t realise how bad it is until you\u2019re in too deep, unfortunately,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Picket Lines:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In South Yorkshire, picket lines happened at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, from 8am to 11am, and in West Yorkshire, at Leeds General Infirmary outside the Jubilee Wing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have urged patients to work with them and to attend any booked appointments unless they hear otherwise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FLeedsTHTrust%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0h3UPKV4rF25ZZ8ifRHb9JFemvbYuwUrYev7sArgeiHueaCbj34kVc6D36jvZTmxrl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"748\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay;
