{"id":2159,"date":"2025-10-27T14:26:56","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T14:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/?p=2159"},"modified":"2025-11-04T16:24:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T16:24:21","slug":"it-was-more-than-sickness-leeds-mother-on-mental-health-toll-of-severe-morning-sickness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/2025\/10\/27\/it-was-more-than-sickness-leeds-mother-on-mental-health-toll-of-severe-morning-sickness\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It was more than sickness\u2019: Leeds mother on mental health toll of severe morning sickness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Women diagnosed with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/pregnancy\/related-conditions\/complications\/severe-vomiting\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"> Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)<\/a> &#8211; a condition which causes extreme or persistent morning sickness during pregnancy &#8211;  face a significantly higher risk of mental health problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New research from King\u2019s College London found they are more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/news\/severe-pregnancy-sickness-raises-risk-of-mental-health-conditions-by-over-50?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">50% more likely to experience mental health conditions<\/a> such as anxiety, depression or PTSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Leeds mother, Samantha Harrison (not her real name), those findings hit close to home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her 2023 pregnancy left her unable to eat, drink, or even stand most smells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t tolerate anything, not food, not smells, not even laundry detergent or perfume,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was very early on, in the first trimester, when I realised this was more than normal sickness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A rare and severe illness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Harrison was later diagnosed with HG, a rare form of pregnancy sickness that affects around <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk\/get-help\/what-is-hyperemesis-gravidarum\/\">one in 100 women<\/a> and can cause dehydration, malnutrition and weight loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just assumed that I had some sort of stomach ulcer,\u201d she said. \u201cThen I found out I was pregnant, and all of a sudden I couldn\u2019t tolerate anything. I was almost vomiting out acid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cI couldn\u2019t keep anything down for more than maybe 20 seconds. Even water wasn\u2019t helping me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although her symptoms were severe, Mrs Harrison said she was never admitted to hospital. \u201cI thought something was wrong with me. I didn\u2019t know what was happening,\u201d she said. \u201cNo one really talks about this unless you go to someone who knows what Hyperemesis is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlotte Howden, Chief Executive of the UK charity <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Pregnancy Sickness Support<\/a>, said HG is widely misunderstood. \u201cHyperemesis Gravidarum is not \u2018just morning sickness\u2019 &#8211; it\u2019s a debilitating condition that leaves women fighting for proper care and support,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Windsor Definition 21 defines HG as severe nausea and\/or vomiting, starting &lt;16 weeks, with inability to eat\/drink &amp; limits on daily life. I lost my identity,\u201d Mrs Harrison said. \u201cI stopped working at around the third month of my pregnancy and I didn\u2019t go back until after the birth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt got to a stage where I couldn\u2019t even shower because I was vomiting nine or ten times a day,\u201d she added. \u201cEven stepping into my garden made me sick. I couldn\u2019t tolerate the air outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI became extremely depressed. I lost my identity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The lasting mental health impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/news\/severe-pregnancy-sickness-raises-risk-of-mental-health-conditions-by-over-50?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"> King\u2019s College London study<\/a>, released in September 2025, found women with HG were more than 50% more likely to develop mental health problems. Researchers said early recognition and psychological support are key to recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I became depressed, I lost who I was,\u201d Mrs Harrison said. \u201cThere were feelings that I didn\u2019t want to be here. It felt like the pregnancy was never going to end. I then suffered from post-natal depression too. I became very isolated, very lonely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/people\/thomas-pollak\">Dr Thomas Pollak, Clinical Reader and Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at King\u2019s College London<\/a>, said the link between HG and mental-health struggles is well-established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHG can be associated with severe psychiatric disorders that require urgent recognition and joined-up physical and mental healthcare from the very start of pregnancy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20250918\/Hyperemesis-gravidarum-associated-with-increased-neuropsychiatric-disorders-in-pregnancy.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">he said.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finding help in Leeds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After reaching out for support, Mrs Harrison was referred to local services. \u201cI was part of this group called <a href=\"https:\/\/learning.nspcc.org.uk\/services-children-families\/baby-steps\">Baby Steps<\/a>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen I got referred to a private group called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsandyorkpft.nhs.uk\/news\/articles\/diverse-mums-group-breaking-barriers-supporting-pandemic\/\">Diverse Mums Group<\/a>, and then I was referred to <a href=\"https:\/\/livewellleeds.org.uk\">Live Well Leeds<\/a>. Currently, I\u2019m under <a href=\"https:\/\/leedsmentalwellbeingservice.co.uk\">Leeds Mental Health Wellbeing<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/talking-therapies-medicine-treatments\/talking-therapies-and-counselling\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cbt\/\">CBT<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the services \u201cmade a big difference\u201d and helped her begin to recover. \u201cOnce I started therapy, I realised I wasn\u2019t alone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At her lowest point, Mrs Harrison said she considered terminating her pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI did think I couldn\u2019t continue with the pregnancy,\u201d she said. \u201cBut as a Muslim, it\u2019s against our religion to do any form of suicide or harm the baby unless there\u2019s something medically wrong. I was terrified, but I reached out for help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI did think I couldn\u2019t continue\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She said her husband found the situation difficult to understand at first. \u201cWhen he realised how bad it was, he didn\u2019t really understand &#8211; it was a learning thing for both of us,\u201d she said. \u201cHe took me out for walks and talked to me, which helped, but I still felt quite lonely because he worked night shifts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her experience reflects findings from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20250903\/Extreme-morning-sickness-found-to-carry-heavy-emotional-and-physical-burden.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Flinders University study<\/a>, which found that over half of women with HG considered ending their pregnancy, while nine in ten said it affected their decision to have more children. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-48228937#:~:text=Most%20had%20considered%20terminating%20their,their%20GP%20had%20been%20%22poor%22\">Other research <\/a>has found that a third of women with HG considered ending their own life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to have another child,\u201d she said, \u201cbut I\u2019m very mindful that when a woman has Hyperemesis, there\u2019s a very high chance she\u2019ll get it again in future pregnancies. That\u2019s the only fear.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3077880\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">recurrence rate of up to 81%<\/a> among women who have previously suffered from HG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2025\/10\/Untitled-410x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2246 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 410px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 410\/1024;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fighting to be taken seriously <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Harrison said her experience was made harder by a lack of understanding from both health professionals and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople don&#8217;t take it seriously enough, and it\u2019s hard when it comes from your loved ones,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen they kept saying to me, it\u2019s nothing but sickness, you\u2019ll be fine, get up, do the housework, get on with it. I didn\u2019t get the support I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that she had to push to be taken seriously by medical professionals as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the start I had to push because of my midwife, I don\u2019t think she understood,\u201d she said. \u201cI kept saying I can\u2019t come to my appointment, I\u2019m vomiting. It was then that I had a midwife come and see me at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cOne of the tablets made me feel like the sickness had been trapped inside my stomach,\u201d she said. \u201cAnother made me go to sleep and gave me nightmares.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cOnce that baby\u2019s in your arms, that feeling goes\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Harrison gave birth by emergency C-section in November 2023. She said holding her daughter changed everything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou will lose your identity, you will feel lonely, you will feel isolated, you will feel like ending your life, but it\u2019s going to be worth it because once that baby\u2019s in your arms, that feeling instantly goes and you\u2019ve basically made it and you\u2019ve brought your bundle of joy into life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere should be more awareness and more understanding around pregnancy and conditions, and just about mums and babies in general.
