{"id":212,"date":"2025-10-08T12:23:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T11:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/?p=212"},"modified":"2025-10-08T12:32:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T11:32:30","slug":"briggate-action-plan-proposals-go-to-leeds-city-council-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/2025\/10\/08\/briggate-action-plan-proposals-go-to-leeds-city-council-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Briggate Action Plan proposals go to Leeds City Council vote"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Plans to make Leeds city centre \u2018safer and more enjoyable\u2019 for shoppers and visitors will be voted on by council leaders next week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8216;Briggate Action Plan\u2019 aims to make Leeds city centre more eco and pedestrian friendly by widening pavements, improving cycle routes, and introducing new safety measures into the area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mandatory \u2018dismount rule\u2019 for bicycles and e-bikes in the Briggate area and the banning of all peddlers and unlicensed street vendors in the area are two of the measures being proposed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council\u2019s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport, and sustainable development, said: \u201cWe\u2019re proud Leeds is home to one of the region\u2019s busiest and most vibrant shopping and leisure destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese proposals are designed to be a starting point and an important opportunity to bring about some changes in the city centre in light of issues the public have raised with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"269\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2025\/10\/bigpic.jpg\" alt=\"Councillor Jonathan Pryor \" class=\"wp-image-226 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/269;width:241px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Councillor Jonathan Pryor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The action plan comes in response to a survey conducted by the Council last year, in which 61% of people thought that bikes and e-bikes were a major issue in Leeds city centre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, 50% of residents said that street peddlers and vendors negatively impacted their shopping experiences in the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An estimated 1100 e-bikes are thought to travel up and down Briggate every day, many of which can travel at speeds of up to 45mph.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of residents are becoming increasingly concerned by the rise in e-bike usage around Leeds city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Helm, aged 88, from Bradford, visits Leeds weekly. She said: \u201cI see them racing by every time I&#8217;m in town, I think a lot of them deliver food and takeaways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey go far too fast and are becoming dangerous, especially for elderly people and kids.
