We wanted to see what \u2018craft\u2019 in relation to alcohol really meant to people involved in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study also found that many drinks businesses across Sheffield have favoured moving away from the term \u2018craft\u2019, claiming the phrase had increasingly been used in branding by large corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally, the term craft had been used to describe small-scale, independent producers of products like micro-brewed beers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"597\" height=\"597\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2025\/10\/Phil-Withington-1-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1091 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 597px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 597\/597;width:501px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Phil Withington<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A recommendation in the study suggested embracing the term \u2018independent\u2019, saying it better reflects the \u2018quality, community and heritage that defines the sector\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Withington said: \u201cIndependent refers to producers and retailers who own their business and make decisions about the alcohol they make or sell, we also found it indicated a kind of ethos around production and consumption which craft had previously been associated with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cWe were surprised how big the independent scene was, and a little surprised just how many producers preferred the term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year the city retained its place as the \u2018Real Ale Capital of the World\u2019, with the city boasting 58 breweries equating to 4 for every 100,000 people, more than London, Manchester and Dublin according to the University of Sheffield\u2019s 2024 report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"643\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jusmedia.co.uk\/360wire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2025\/10\/Brew-3-643x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1097 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 643px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 643\/1024;width:230px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave Pickersgill, Pub Heritage Officer for Sheffield CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), says that Sheffield&#8217;s independent drinking scene stems from its long history of small businesses working together &#8216;for the common good&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cThe brewing trade is no different &#8211; there is a camaraderie in the independent Sheffield pub\/brewing scene which is perhaps not replicated in other UK cities, people openly share successes and failures, staff move between employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has resulted in Sheffield having a relatively high number of independent outlets with many inter-links.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cSheffield is a good place to be independent and small, this reputation is spreading, it&#8217;s not just the infrastructure, it&#8217;s also the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study calls for the creation of a collective body, to give Sheffield\u2019s pubs, breweries and other alcohol retailers a \u2018more unified\u2019 voice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Withington said: \u201cWe very much hope the city can develop an indy drinks hub to represent the sector, and to maximise its huge potential in the UK and globally.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Study reveals height of Sheffield&#8217;s independent drinking scene<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":266,"featured_media":1086,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[15,6,18,22],"tags":[32,248,250,249,251,43],"class_list":["post-1081","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-hometop","category-infocus","category-infocustop","tag-business","tag-craftbeer","tag-hospitality","tag-independentbusiness","tag-retail","tag-sheffield"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
