Enormous supergrid transformer and police convoy set to slow traffic around North Yorkshire
12 October 2025

A 200-tonne supergrid transformer is being delivered to a developing substation in Monk Fryston today, with the low speed convoy expected to cause temporary road disruptions in the area.

The route, planned in accordance by the police and highway agencies, will begin via the M62 westbound before making its way through the A1(M) northbound and A63.

Its destination will be the Monk Fryston Substation, on Rawfield Lane, the latest location for the National Grid’s Yorkshire Green Project, part of the Great Green Upgrade.

A National Grid spokesperson said: “Our thanks go to local communities for their support, patience and understanding as we approach completion of these supergrid transformer deliveries.

“Upgrading the grid will help connect more home-grown British energy, supporting increased demand as well as boosting local economies, creating jobs, and providing clean, more affordable energy.”

This is the last of the supergrid transformers to be delivered to the Monk Fryston substation, with another expected delivery in the coming weeks to the Overton location.
