A 57-year-old man died in a crash on the A628 Hemsworth bypass in West Yorkshire on Saturday while driving his wife to work.

Paul Hart, from Shafton near Barnsley, was fatally injured when the white Ford EcoSport he was driving collided with a blue Volkswagen Polo at about 06:00 GMT.

His wife, 60, was taken to hospital with injuries that West Yorkshire Police said were not life-threatening.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on police bail.

In a tribute, Mr Hart’s family described him as “an exceptionally proud, doting grandad” to his five-month-old granddaughter, and said: “His sudden loss is devastating to all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

They added: “Paul was a beloved husband, son, brother, father, stepdad, uncle, brother-in-law, and true friend.

“Paul will be lovingly remembered and profoundly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and his extended Airsoft family.”

Police are asking anyone who saw the collision or what happened before it to come forward. They particularly want to hear from drivers with dashcam footage.
