With Bonfire Night approaching on Thursday 5 November, South Yorkshire Emergency services are reminding people about the dangers of fireworks.
The warning follows an incident in which an elderly woman had a firework put through her letterbox in Sheffield last month.
The incident happened on Kenbourne Road in Nether Edge on Wednesday 14 October, with three fire crews attending the scene.
The woman was not injured, but South Yorkshire Police have warned that the incident could have caused serious harm.
Last year, police attended 48 firework-related incidents across South Yorkshire during Bonfire Night.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is advising people to attend organised displays rather than set off their own fireworks at home.
However, for those planning private celebrations, it is recommended to keep fireworks away from people and buildings, and never return to see one after it has been lit.
Fireworks can also cause distress to animals, with loud bangs affecting pets, livestock and wildlife.
Fireworks can legally be set off until midnight on Bonfire Night, an hour later than the usual 11 pm cut-off.
It is also illegal to throw or set off fireworks in streets or other public places.
