Barnsley could see direct trains to London return after nearly 20 years
2 November 2026

Plans to bring back direct trains between Barnsley and London for the first time since 2008 are being looked at.

The proposals would see Barnsley railway station extended to allow a possible direct service to the capital.

The plans are part of South Yorkshire’s wider transport investment scheme, with the work expected to take place between April 2028 and March 2029.

Documents prepared for the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority describe improvements as a way to allow experimental train services to London.

However, no train operator has been confirmed, and there is currently no date for when services could begin.

The proposals are still in the early stages and would need further approvals before work can go ahead.
