Volunteers help renovate Doncaster veteran’s home after cancer diagnosis
31 October 2026

Local tradespeople have stepped in to help renovate the home of a Doncaster military veteran who has been struggling since being diagnosed with cancer.

Collin Ponder, 56, from Hexthorpe, was diagnosed with stage three kidney cancer in 2023 and has since faced rising bills and worsening living conditions.

His home had fallen into disrepair, with holes in the roof, damaged plaster and a kitchen that could no longer be used.

Jordan Paton, from Paton Plastering, started a fundraising appeal after visiting the property to carry out a small job.

Speaking to the Doncaster Free Press, he said: “Collin stepped up for us when he served our country. Now, it is our turn to step up for him.”

Renovation work has begun, but organisers are still appealing for volunteers and donations of building materials to help finish the work.

They have nearly reached their target of £2000, with only less than £500 to reach it.
