A demonstration against the far right and racism is set to take place in Sheffield city centre today.

The demonstration, organised by Sheffield Stand Up to Racism, is backed by over 50 organisations from across South Yorkshire, including trade unions, campaign groups, political parties and faith organisations.

Attendees will gather at Devonshire Green from 11.30 am before marching through the city centre to Barker’s Pool, where a rally with speakers and music is planned outside Sheffield City Hall.

Organisers say the demonstration is intended to bring people together against racism and division, celebrating Sheffield’s diverse communities.

According to Sheffield Stand Up to Racism, the event expects to see speakers including Dave Pike from the region’s Trade Unions Congress, priest Hugh Thomas, prominent human rights campaigner Melinda Mo-Martinez from City of Sanctuary Sheffield, and Rafia Hussain.

Those attending are being encouraged to ‘bring whistles, instruments, and make some noise’ at the family-friendly march, via a post by Sheffield Stand Up to Racism via Instagram.

People travelling through the city centre today are advised to be aware of the planned march times and the possibility of disruption while it takes place.
