Discussions are underway about the future of the long-disused Alma Tavern, between Rotherham Council and a popular local brewery next door to the site.
Rotherham Council is in active discussions with Chantry Brewery, operator of Cutler’s Arm, on how investment in the Westgate area could support the site’s redevelopment. The Council believes the site could give a large boost to Rotherham’s expanding hospitality industry.
Crucially, the plan is to save the distinctive and historic frontage and gable walls of the Alma Inn, while the Council will demolish the rest of the building.
The exterior of the pub dates back to 1909, and features one of the few remaining references one of the town’s first brewery, Bentley’s.
This comes after structural surveys commissioned by Rotherham Council identified sections of the Alma Tavern, featured on the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List, poses serious safety risks and requires partial demolition.
The building had suffered significant fire damage in 2012 and has since deteriorated in condition. Recent structural reports deemed the building unsafe for use.
Mick Warburton, Director at Chantry Brewery said, “The Alma Tavern’s historic frontage and beautiful façade are an important part of Rotherham’s heritage, and we commit to preserving them.”
The brewery previously received a Rotherham Civic Society award in 2014 for their restoration of the neighbouring Cutlers Arms.
Councillor John Williams, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Jobs and the Local Economy, commented on the proposed works:
“We understand that many people will feel disappointed when they see part of this historic building disappear. However, detailed surveys show that the Alma Tavern has deteriorated significantly, and we believe removing the unsafe structure offers the safest and most responsible solution.”
The Council plans to start demolition work in winter 2026, once it secures planning approval and completes the necessary surveys.
