Sheffield City Council has proposed to invest a staggering £1m in solar panels and battery storage systems for over 200 Council homes across Sheffield.

The proposed energy tariff arrangement will generate an estimated £105,900 a year, with aims to support tenants in reducing their energy costs and provide income to help finance future climate investment.

It comes at a pivotal moment, as the Housing Policy Committee considers a new plan to ensure every Council home achieves a minimum Energy Performance Certificate rating of C by 2030.

The plan, if approved by committee members, would see thousands more solar panels and batteries installed across the Council’s housing stock.

£1m will come from Sheffield Climate Investment, the Council’s climate investment scheme, and a further £671,500 from its Housing Revenue Account.

Cllr Douglas Johnson, Chair of the Housing Policy Committee, says that, “It is another important step in our work to provide good-quality, energy-efficient Council homes that fit the future across Sheffield.”

The Finance and Performance Policy Committee will consider the proposal as part of its Capital Approvals at its next meeting on Monday 19 October.
