£11m investment planned for Hillsborough Leisure Centre
13 October 2026

Sheffield City Council is set to invest £11 million into Hillsborough Leisure Centre refurbishment.

The renovation would include new, upgraded studio spaces, a new health suite as well as refurbishment to the changing facilities and to the pool hall.

The investment brings forward the project’s initial 2030-2032 timeline in order to accelerate improvements for local residents.

The project expects to provide social, health and financial benefits. Such as improved accessibility for disabled people and those with long-term health conditions, and support the longer-term financial sustainability of the centre and the city’s wider leisure services.

Councillor Brian Holmshaw of the Parks and Leisure Policy Committee, said: “Hillsborough Leisure Centre plays an important role in the lives of local people.

“From swimming lessons and fitness classes to everyday exercise, it supports the health and wellbeing of thousands of residents.”

The programme is proposed to begin in April 2027 in phases with parts of the centre still being open as a way to minimise disruption for customers rather than a complete closure.

Environmental improvements would include upgraded LED lighting, efficiency improvements to ventilation equipment, lighting sensors and upgrades to the building management system.

The proposals to bring forward the funding to allow refurbishment to start earlier are set to be considered by Sheffield City Council’s Finance and Performance Policy Committee on Monday 19 October.

The proposals will also be informed by consultations through October and November 2026. Residents can attend one of the drop-in events held by staff at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre about the proposals.

These consultations would run over the course of three days: Tuesday 20 October from 3pm-7pm, Wednesday 21 October from 9am-12noon and Monday 2 November from 9am-12noon.

Depending on the necessary approvals and completion of contractual arrangements, Everyone Active would carry out the refurbishment through its existing leisure operating contract with Sheffield City Council.
