The annual memorial which remembers those who have lost their lives to road traffic incidents, will be holding its 25th service in Hull.

The service will be held on Sunday 16 November, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

The global event remembers everyone killed or inured on the roads, and acknowledges the suffering of victims, families and communities.

Lord Mayor Councillor Cheryl Payne said: “My thoughts are with anyone who has gone through the pain of losing a family member or loved one in a road accident.

“We also pay tribute to those who are coping with a serious injury, where it’s also important to recognise those who are providing care for them.

“I am honoured to have been asked to read a poem at the service, and I hope that bringing people together who have these shared tragedies can in some way be a help to them.”

Hull City Council have invited anyone who has lost a loved one on Hull’s roads to come to the service, taking place at St Mary’s Church, Lowgate, to light a candle and bring a photograph to honour their memory.

The service will be led by Rev Tony Brookes, Chaplain at Hull Hospitals, and attended by Lord Mayor Councillor Cheryl Payne and Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council.

Cllr Ieronimo said: “Every life lost on our roads is a tragedy, which is why it is so important that we do everything we can to ensure the roads are safe for everyone.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the World Day of Remembrance sends a powerful message to all road users to take extra care.

“I hope families and friends will find comfort in Sunday’s service as they remember their lost loved ones.”

Yesterday, Cllr Ieronimo laid a wreath at the memorial stone for road traffic victims outside the Streetlife Museum, on behalf of the council.

The service will open its doors at 1.45pm and will begin from 2.30pm.
