The right-wing UK Independence Party (UKIP) will stage a protest march in Sheffield this Saturday (8 November), calling it an opportunity to “reclaim” the city, with counter-protests also planned at the same location.
The UKIP rally is scheduled to begin at 1 pm outside Sheffield Cathedral, in the city centre (S1 1HA).
The party comes under the leadership of Nick Tenconi, who took charge of UKIP during the backlash over the party’s increasingly hard-right agenda.
UKIP’s published message on their social media states: “Join us on the 8th of November at 1pm outside Sheffield Cathedral (S1 1HA) to demand the mass-deportation of every illegal, Islamist and all those here to subvert our great nation!”
Counter-protestors are already calling on supporters to turn out and oppose UKIP’s protest.
Local advocacy group Stand Up to Racism is organising a demonstration at 12 pm outside Sheffield Cathedral ahead of UKIP’s protest.
In a social media post, the organisation said: “We can’t allow Nazi Nick Tenconi to come to Sheffield unopposed. We are proud of our city, its migrants and refugees, and its history of strikes, protest and resistance.”
South Yorkshire said officers will be deployed to manage both events and ensure public safety.
Reported by The Star, a spokesperson said: “We are engaging with local communities, partners and the event organisers, and remain in close contact with them ahead of any planned activity.
“You may see an increased police presence in the city centre on Saturday afternoon, and we would encourage anyone with concerns or queries to speak to uniformed police officers while they are in the area.”
360Wire will be on the scene to provide live coverage and updates on the day.
