Hull City Council have urged disadvantaged families to apply for free childcare for their two-year-old children.
The funding scheme lasts two years and offers up to 15 hours of childcare for two-year-olds in low-income families.
Melissa Toft, 34, Manager at Little Acorns Nursery, Hull, commented on the impact the scheme has.
She said: “The two-year-old funding is an amazing incentive to get children in the setting. We have helped many families with children who have SEND.
“The fact that children are coming to nursery on the funding and are being seen by professionals means we can get any necessary support in place to help them reach their full potential and work sensitively with parents to help them understand their child’s needs.”
Families can access the funding after their child turns two, if the household income is less than £15,400 per year.
If the application is successful, families can choose from multiple childcare providers including nurseries, pre-schools, childminders and school nurseries.
Hull City Council stated that this summer, 831 two year olds accessed the two year funding for low income households.
Toft said: “The funding has helped some of our families get back into work too. We have had some parents pick up some work when their child has been at their nursery sessions.
“The funding can have a really positive impact on parents’ mental health as they are having more time to themselves and to complete chores such as housework.
“Children’s development flourishes at nursery as they are engaging with other children and in play with other adults.”
If a family’s income is above £15,400, they may still qualify if their child meets certain requirements.
If the child is looked after by a local authority, has an Education, Health and Care Plan, receives Disability Living Allowance, has left care under an adoption order, or has no recourse to public funds, they could still qualify for the funding.
Councillor Linda Tock, portfolio holder for children’s services, said: “Too many children miss out on the chance to really explore the world around them, build relationships, reach developmental milestones and of course, have fun.
“And this is often due to financial disadvantages for modern families.
“The 2 Year Funding Scheme can give around one-third of children in Hull the chance to experience high-quality childcare and early learning support.”
