Construction is underway on Rawcliffe Bridge Solar Farm, a major operation which will produce enough green electricity to power every leisure centre operated by the local authority.
The state-of-the-art project located near Rawcliffe Bridge, is owned and managed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and will generate 6 megawatts of electricity.
Once in operation, the solar farm will offset 1400 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is the equivalent of removing 950 cars from the road.
It supports the Council’s key priority of Valuing the Environment by addressing climate change and contributes towards the council meeting its legally-binding net zero 2050 target.
A wildflower meadow and hedges will also be planted nearby to further biodiversity in the region and the possibility of installing a bee hive is also being explored.
Councillor Paul West, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “It’s great to see this project under construction, which will play a key role in fulfilling our environmental obligations and benefitting the local environment in a cost effective manner.”
