The Sheffield Heeley MP has reacted to the 16-year life sentence for killer Mohammed ‘Umar’ Khan.
Khan was sentenced to 16 years in prison today (October 22) by Mrs Justice Ellenbogen. Willgoose and Khan had been friends at All Saints Catholic High School before a fight between two other boys led to them falling out.
Khan then fatally stabbed Willgoose twice in the heart outside the school canteen on 3 February 2024.
Reacting to the sentencing, Haigh said: “Today, Mohammed Umar Khan has been sentenced to life for the senseless murder of Harvey Willgoose that has devastated his family, friends, and our community.
“While this sentence brings some measure of justice, it can never undo the unbearable loss Harvey’s loved ones have suffered.
“What matters now is that Harvey’s death marks a moment of real change. A child safeguarding review is underway to examine the circumstances that led to his murder and to establish if it was remotely preventable. We cannot allow its findings to be ignored, as so many have been before.
“I will hold the Government and all relevant organisations accountable to ensure this review delivers meaningful reform, not more words on paper. But for today, my thoughts are only with Harvey’s family and all those who loved him.”
