As the clocks go back and evenings draw in, South Yorkshire police are urging communities to stay alert and take steps to prevent criminals taking advantage of the darker nights.
Superintendent Charlotte Bloxham, who is leading the work during the dark nights period, said: “We don’t want to see anyone become a victim of burglary, and our officers work hard every day to ensure criminals who seek out opportunities are arrested and put before the courts.”
As Halloween and the festive season approach, South Yorkshire Police are encouraging residents to adopt a few simple but effective habits such as locking windows and doors, using timer switches for lights, securing sheds and gates, and keeping valuables out of sight.
People are also advised to stay alert while out and about, keeping bags and wallets close, avoiding using back pockets for phones, and being cautious around ATMs, especially in poorly lit areas.
Superintendent Bloxham added: “These small actions can make a big difference. We want everyone to enjoy the season safely, and we’re here to support our communities every step of the way.”
Any suspicious activity can be reported by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.
