Trick or treat? Police share Halloween safety tips for South Yorkshire
31 October 2026

South Yorkshire Police are urging residents to stay safe and be considerate of others celebrating Halloween tonight.

Police remind trick-or-treaters to visit only houses with Halloween decorations and to respect homes displaying ‘No Trick or Treat’ signs.

Families are also being encouraged to wear bright clothing, stay on pavements and take extra care when crossing roads in the dark.

The warning comes after three adults needed hospital treatment following two separate dog attacks in Barnsley overnight on Thursday into Friday.

Police seized both dogs and warned that costumes, loud noises and increased visitors can distress pets.

Last Halloween weekend, police received 26 reports of dogs causing fear or harm across South Yorkshire.

Dog owners are being advised to keep pets away from the front door when trick-or-treaters visit.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue also advises residents to take care with candles and keep them away from Halloween costumes and other flammable materials
