Young performers are bringing Dolly Parton’s hit musical 9 to 5 to the Rotherham stage.

Wickersley Youngstars will perform the comedy musical at Rotherham Civic Theatre from October 20 to 23. 

Marie Hadfield, from the Wickersley Youngstars committee, said the production was chosen because it combines “a brilliant score of laugh-out-loud comedy and a message that still resonates today.”

“We wanted a show that would challenge our performers, showcase a wide range of talent and appeal to audiences of all ages.”

The cast ranges in age from 10 to 25. Ms Hadfield said: “It gives us a wonderful mix of energy, experience and perspectives. Bringing together performers of different ages is one of the things that makes the production so special.”

The musical also has a coincidental connection to Rotherham through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, when the country star came to South Yorkshire in 2007 as part of her book donation scheme.

Although there is no formal partnership between the library and the production, the group said Parton’s work to improve children’s access to books through her Imagination Library was something to admire.

Ms Hadfield said: “Her legacy is one of positivity, opportunity and empowerment, which are values that align closely with what we try to achieve at Wickersley Youngstars.”

Despite being set decades ago, the group believes the musical’s themes remain relevant today. Ms Hadfield continued: “Although the show is set in the late 1970s, many of the themes remain relevant. At its heart, 9 to 5 is about people finding their voice, standing up for what is right and challenging unfair treatment.”

The group said the production also offers an opportunity to celebrate local talent and bring the community together: “Productions like this bring people together, create friendships, build confidence and give local performers the opportunity to be part of something truly special.

“For Wickersley Youngstars, every show is a chance to develop young talent and provide experiences that many of our members will carry with them for life. For the wider community, it’s an opportunity to support local theatre and celebrate the incredible talent that exists across Rotherham.”
