Barnsley Greens are hosting a swap shop at St George’s Church, York Street, in Barnsley Town Centre on Saturday 24 October from 1-3pm.
This marks their third swap shop of the year, with this edition hosting a new “menders market” for people to have their clothes repaired by volunteers. The swap shop invites those with clothes accessories, books, games and household items that are no longer needed to donate, swap with others or and enjoy refreshments.
Barnsley Greens Co-chair Kate Raynor said: “It’s an opportunity for people to have a bit of a clear out and replace things they don’t use anymore with some items new to them.
I work in the waste industry and there’s a push to reduce landfill and increase recycling rates, but we’re all just buying more stuff. As a nation we still throw out 350,000 tonnes of textiles a year, a lot of which would have been reusable.
“We want to make this a community space where people can come along, meet people, have a cuppa, and take home some useful items which could have ended up in the bin otherwise.”
The Party are working alongside local charities to “foster community spirit and allow residents to share resources without financial barriers.” The event aims to encourage sustainable fashion and provide guidance on upcycling.
