A Rotherham driver has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving following a crash that killed 58-year-old Edward Hirst.

Jonathon Bower, aged 49, pleaded guilty during a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court last Friday, October 16.

The 49-year-old man from Brinsworth was charged in connection with the crash on the A616 Manchester Road, near Stocksbridge, which occurred shortly after 10.20 am on April 7, 2025.

Edward Hirst was killed in the collision, and no other vehicles were involved.

Bower initially pleaded not guilty in December 2025 but changed his plea during the hearing at Sheffield Crown Court.

Following Bower’s change of plea, the case was adjourned for sentencing, with a date set for January 2027. He has been released on unconditional bail until then.
