Six men have been sentenced and handed lengthy football banning orders for their roles in violent clashes that erupted in Huddersfield town centre following a football match in 2022.
The disturbance broke out on John William Street and St George’s Square on 29 October 2022, shortly after a game between Huddersfield Town AFC and Millwall.
Witnesses reported shouting, disorderly behaviour, and physical violence as rival supporters made their way towards the train station.
Officers intervened as a crowd of up to 100 people became involved in the chaos, making several arrests at the scene and later identifying those responsible through investigations.
At Leeds Crown Court on Thursday 6 November, the six men were sentenced for offences of affray, with punishments ranging from suspended sentences to custodial terms, alongside football banning orders of up to eight years.
In total, five of the men received prison sentences, while one was given a suspended term and community service.
Chief Inspector Peter Hall of West Yorkshire Police said the disorder was “disgraceful” and that the sentences sent a clear message about the consequences of football-related violence.
He said: “The scenes we witnessed in Huddersfield town centre on 29 October 2022 were disgraceful and, as a result of their involvement, these men have now all received lengthy bans from attending any UK football match.”
“West Yorkshire Police will always treat incidents like this very seriously. We work closely with our own and visiting clubs to fully investigate any offences committed and we will also take robust action against those responsible, including seeking Football Banning Orders against them.”
