Police dog Luna retires after 5 years of loyal service
7 November 2025

PD Luna has officially retired from duty after serving 5 years on the frontline and being one of South Yorkshire Police’s most celebrated service dogs.

The German Shepherd was known across the force for her sharp instincts and fearless attitude, and has spent half a decade tracking offenders, finding missing people and keeping communities safe.

In her final year alone, PD Luna helped secure 23 arrests, including suspects who police say would not have been caught without her help.

She also served on the frontline during the 2024 public disorder, earning praise from officers for her bravery and reliability under pressure.

Her outstanding record saw her crowned as “Animal of the Year” at the 2025 South Yorkshire Police Force Awards.

PD Luna’s handler, who worked alongside her throughout her career, said the bond they shared was unique.

He said: “Luna has been an exceptional partner, she is brave, intelligent and has a contagious attitude for her work.”

“She’s not just a working dog, she has become family, and I am so proud of everything she has achieved and thankful for the way she has protected me throughout and listened to me for hours on end while we have been on patrol.”

Although PD Luna will no longer be chasing suspects, she will continue to live with her handler and his other operational police dogs, enjoying a well-earned retirement filled with long walks, playtime and belly rubs.

South Yorkshire Police thanked PD Luna for her years of dedication, noting that her contribution left “a lasting impact on both the force and the communities she helped protect”.
