A unique number plate used by the mayor of Leeds has been sold for £750,000.

Leeds City Council approved the sale of the number plate following a comprehensive process, the funds are to go back into the council budget.

The plate was sold to the highest of two bidders, whose identity can’t be disclosed, and is set to be one of the highest sums in UK history.

The plate was U1, and will now be replaced by L6EDS, one also owned by the council, but is much less valuable.

Councillor Debra Coupar, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for resources said: “This sale will generate crucial funds to help deliver important services against the backdrop of a uniquely challenging financial situation.

“Protecting those services has to be our priority and we are pleased this process has given us the opportunity to raise such a significant sum.”

The plate U1 is significant, as after the Motor Act 1903 required all cars to have number plates, U1 was the first plate issued in Leeds, and has been used by different mayors for decades.
