Police issue safety warning ahead of Bonfire Night

Tonight, families across Yorkshire will be celebrating and coming together for Bonfire Night.

In preparation for this, South Yorkshire Police have issued a safety warning to the public, asking people to play their part in reducing unnecessary emergency calls.

Superintendent Charlotte Bloxham, who is leading the force’s efforts during the darker nights period, said: “Bonfire Night should be enjoyable for everyone, but safety must come first.

“We’re all in this together, and we ask our communities to be respectful, be careful, and help us keep South Yorkshire safe.

“We have a zero-tolerance approach to anyone who poses a threat to life, property, or public safety—including our officers.”

The statement mentioned how tonight brings a significant increase in emergency calls and incidents, whilst police will be patrolling neighbourhoods, control room staff prepare for a surge in demand.

They reminded people that It is illegal to let off fireworks in a public place and could seriously hurt passers by.

To prepare safely, South Yorkshire Police provided tips to avoid any incidents happening, these include; avoiding garden bonfires, using fireworks responsibly by buying genuine products, know the law and secure your property.
