A vigil is to be held in Beverley, near Hull, to commemorate violence against women and girls.

The event will take place on 25 November to mark the start of 16 days of activism by charity White Ribbon UK, which campaigns to end the gender-based violence.

Organised by Women’s Institute Beverley and Beverley Town Council, with support of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the group will gather at Wednesday Market in Beverley at 18:00.

From there, a ‘walk of solidarity’ will commence and lead to Toll Gavel United Church, before the vigil begins at 18:30, with displays, speakers, and songs.

Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding cabinet member for communities and public protection, said: “We all have a role to play in ending violence against women and girls. This event is an important opportunity to show our support and commitment to this cause, and we encourage residents to attend and pledge their support by signing up to the White Ribbon campaign.”

White Ribbon UK encourages people to make the White Ribbon Promise in writing on their website: ‘I promise to never use, excuse, or remain silent about men’s violence against women.’

Members of the public are welcomed to join the vigil in support of the cause.

Refreshments will be made available at Toll Gavel United Church after the vigil.
