Public warned to protect bins from arson
4 November 2025

The public have been warned to take extra precautions to protect their wheelie bins from theft and arson as Bonfire Night approaches.

Hull City Council has said that increased activity around 5 November can lead to unattended bins being at higher risk.

Yellow tags will be placed on bins which are deemed a potential high risk by Hull City Council, in partnership with Humberside Fire and Rescue.

The yellow tags will provide information on how to protect your bin, as well as contact details for those with concerns about arson or antisocial behaviour.

The council has released prevention methods such as storing bins within the boundary of your property or storing them behind a locked gate where possible, and avoiding overfilling the bins so that loose rubbish is laying around.

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “We want everyone to enjoy Bonfire Night, but safety must come first.

“Sadly, this time of year brings an increased risk of theft and arson involving wheelie bins. Simple actions, like bringing your bin in promptly where possible, can make a big difference.”
