A man has appeared in Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on 11 counts of attempted murder, actual bodily harm and possession of a bladed article, following a knife attack on a train in Cambridgeshire and a separate incident in London hours before.

Anthony Williams, 32, from ‘no fixed abode’, was arrested at Huntingdon Station, near Cambridgeshire within eight minutes of the first emergency call.

Police have ruled out terrorism, saying the suspect acted alone and that no motive has yet been identified.

A 35-year-old man who was also arrested at the scene in connection with the stabbing has now been released, after officers say he was not involved.

Speaking to Sky News this morning, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the government will not be implementing airport-style security scanners at train stations following this attack, despite calls to do so.
